Go and have a great time.I live on the East Coast and am thinking of going to the sheep show. I make just over $135K/year, so after paying the mortgage and other bills, I really dont have much of a hunting budget left over. I do dream of hunting all the sheep, many of the goats, and just love being in the mountains period. Do you think it's possible for a guy like me to go there and have a good time even if Im not booking hunts or bidding on tags, or am I going to be out of place? Thanks for any advice
It died of natural causes in 2005. Here’s a not very good article about it.@Oak, what is the significance of the huge deadhead in the corner of the booth?
Seems like I have heard about it before.
If that had happened to me I would have had a hard time sleeping for a few nights!I guess I should have gone. Name got pulled in the 1 more for 4. Hope whoever won it has a great hunt!
Did you go to anything other than the auction following the banquet?I went this year and I guess it's just not my thing. For the most part I thought it was mostly wealthy guys with egos bigger than the state of Alaska looking to "buy " their next trophy.
That would be a hard one. All of the state chapters giving away hunts at their banquets for life members almost deters me from buying a membership. I know supporting the chapters is not about what you can win, but if I buy a life membership then I feel obligated to go to their banquets, which I do not have the time for, and I do not think I could handle having my name pulled and not being there.I guess I should have gone. There's a fair amount going on but I guess I'd rather take the days spent there and have that time on the mountain instead.Did you go to anything other than the auction following the banquet?
There’s a lot more going on there than that.
Maybe I’m biased because myself and I’ve lost count how many friends have won free hunts there
I don’t like the influencer thing either. I don’t think they’re that noticeable at Sheep Show. I’ve never been to the expo in Salt Lake City, but I hear that one is a whole different deal. There's a fair amount going on but I guess I'd rather take the days spent there and have that time on the mountain instead.
No doubt a lot of people enjoy the show but it's just not for me.
I just have a hard time with where hunting has went in my life. It's becoming a rich man's game and seems so many are only hunting for bragging rights and pics to put on social media. And then there's all the influencers who think they are God's gift to the hunting world.
I also have a hard time believing that 90% of proceeds go to sheep conservation when one looks at the current sheep condition across most of the western states.
I know the guy that got his name pulled twice for the MT WSF lifetime member dall sheep raffle, and he wasn't there both times. The part that sucked was, he is also from Hamilton, and the first thing they do when they pulled the name is say, "this guy's from Hamilton". Got me excited for a couple seconds anyway! That would be a hard one. All of the state chapters giving away hunts at their banquets for life members almost deters me from buying a membership. Dang it that’s a heart breakerI guess I should have gone. Name got pulled in the 1 more for 4. Hope whoever won it has a great hunt!
I have been to western hunt expo and its night and day different from sheep show with all the influencer groups pushing there chest out, I have never felt that way at sheep show and believe most guys that are sheep hunters kinda are a more quiet to themselves group.I don’t like the influencer thing either. 90% goes back to the state agencies. Whether they are effectively using it for sheep conservation or not, is a valid question.
In Arizona 100% actually goes back and that state does tremendous job with the money.
Is New Mexico responsibly using the funding? I have no idea. Hopefully
It’s been a week, it’s been hard.If that had happened to me I would have had a hard time sleeping for a few nights!
