Got my bighorn Euro mount back from the taxidermist. I found a dead mesquite big enough to cut a slice from and after lots of sanding to get the saw marks out I covered it with clear epoxy. It's about 2" thick.
I think it turned out pretty nice. (y)

Nice! Would you post a photo of the connection between the skull and the wood? I’ve got a (legal) deadhead currently on a cheap pedestal mount and wouldn’t mind a wall mounted upgrade such as this.

It's the natural opening in the back of the skull where the spinal column goes through into the brain cavity. The dowel fit fairly snug but the taxidermist packed some kind of JB weld around in the opening and also drove 3 screws through the skull into the dowel.

Super cool! Turned out great! Walk me through the clear epoxy process…….I’d like to try that with some black locust

This is what I used for the epoxy. They come in different sizes depending on you project. It's pretty straight forward and easy to use.
You can keep adding as many layers as you want. Any bubbles that form while pouring can be removed while still wet with a hair dryer or torch.20250401_101750.jpg
