Shad Unlimited, anyone?

I don't usually write about fishing but I came across this cool story while working in rural New Jersey this month. Outdoor Life was kind enough to run it. Also I am reading Founding Fish by John McPhee. Any shad anglers out there? Sounds like a lot of fun. And good eating.

VA still has shad festivals such as this one. I never made it to one in the 17 years I lived there. Now that I live near the Columbia River I see mobs of people fishing at the Bonneville Dam but other than a few Vietnamese people I know, I've never met anyone who eats them. My coworkers that fish for shad use them for crab bait.
