SFC is putting forth some effort this year......

That was by far the most ducks I have seen at one time. I have seen huge groups of goose flocks but this was just a MASS of mallards :) One more shot at some coming up weekend after next. I have a bit of a special event coming up this weekend.....tune in for something out of the ordinary for Hunttalk!!! ;)

Home from the gym this morning and time to pack.......gotta catch a 1315 flight to.......beautiful, scenic .......Fort Wayne, IN!!!! I am heading home to take a disabled Hoosier vet on hunt as part of my work with American Heroes in Action. Here are some of the details on how this came together.

Last summer we went home for my wife's HS reunion over the 4th of July holiday. At the reunion I met a friend of the wife's from HS named Rob. We talked hunting a bit and tipped a few cocktails. They had a silent auction as a fund raiser and Rob bought the ax I made and donated to the auction.

Flash forward a couple of months and we are talking hunting as the season is approaching. I tell him about how I was supposed to be taking a vet hunting in IN this year but the land owner who had volunteered his property was now ghosting me and it looked like it wasn't going to happen. Rob tells me that his old boss (Rob is a funeral director) started a hunting business when his family sold their string of funeral homes and that he will ping him to see if there was anyway he could do something for us. A day or so later Rob gave me Doug McComb's number and told me to call him as he was excited to help out. At that point Rob also sent me a link to Doug's place and the whole thing changed a little :)

I will say with full disclosure up front that high fence is not my thing in anyway (as well as most on here) .....buuuuuttt.......here is the place. https://www.camelotridgeresort.com/ (Rob is in the pics- has the UA hat on). Doug cheerfully has given the chance for an IN vet to come up to the resort and harvest a buck of his choice....no restrictions. Again, while this is not my thing, I realize what a generous donation this is.

So I am off with more to come!!

Well, looks good. For a fellow veteran nothing but the best.
Might ruffle a few feathers,I sure wouldn't turn down the opportunity
to help. 〽💥

I'm typing this on my phone, so forgive me. I am currently sitting in the l ok edge drinking Jamesons, watching a hunting show and listening to some LOUD as bonkers out on the pond :)

Today started with me rendevousing with Jason (our hunter) outside Fort Wayne for the half hour jaunt to the preserve. We talked for a few and headed out.

The first building we came to was the office where we met Kevin ( ranch manager) and the crew. We signed Jason in and made a plan for the afternoon. Lunch first in the nearby town of Albion and then back for the afternoon hunt........

Lunch got me another tenderloin. :) and a discussion about which stand we would head to when we got back to the ranch.

We returned to the property and headed up to the lodge to stow our gear and get ready.

The lodge is outrageously cool and full of our host's mounts from all over the world. After the awe subsidies we hopped into a utv and were off to the stand. Kevin told us it was more of a morning stand but he always had good luck.

We tucked into the shadow blind and looked out over one of my favorite sights.....an Indiana hardwood forest. Not more than 20 minutes in we saw parts of 2 bucks. They were too far off (did I mention Jason was hunting with a FLINTLOCK?) And in thick stuff but a good start.

We sat and shot the shit for about another hour when all hell broke loose. We first heard and then saw 5 bucks running up the draw in front of us about 120 yds and closing. I had time enough to tell Jason "Get ready for the last one, I'll grunt to stop him " . As he rose his rifle the deer had slowed and were moving close to our left. Once he was on the deer I told him I was going to grunt. I did and the buck froze broadside at 32 yds. Boom went the flint with a perfect shot. The buck hit a game trail and ended up.fallkmg about 75 yards away. There was zero ground shrinkage. :)

Once we had that brute taken care of we took the long way back to.the lodge to see a cabin they just put up. Once back at the lodge we cleaned up and gathered for dinner and a few cocktails along with stories from.us all. I'll attach various pics of the property too. It is about time for bed and dreams of those pesky honkers outside. :)

Getting ready to pack up and head out on what I think will be my last hunt of the year. Going out to Pierce, CO to smackdown some honkers!!! I was going to take the VW (40+ mpg will make you want to do that :) ) but given the weather, 6+"snow at the house and still going, I will be firing up Doug :) Wish me luck!!!

Just stopped in Eaton fir a quick bite. Between Greely and here there were geese EVERYWHERE!! I almost put Doug in a ditch. Weather is much milder up here. Just flurries and the roads are clear.
