Any of yall ever rented or had any experience using Sat phones? Where we are going to be in Idaho, we are not too confident in the ability for our phones to have reception, and one member of the group has a phone call to make to his daughter who will be turning 6 on that day (Mom moved the birthday party up, just for the trip) but also in order to send updates and receive calls in the case there is an emergency back home. We have a Garmin Spot to use, but we have been bouncing around the idea of using one of those fancy phones.

I’m not a fan. Inreach is much easier. There’s no questioning what was said and you don’t have to rely on someone to pick up the other end. If you really wanted to talk to your kids it may be worth it. But for pure logistics purposes and letting people know you’re okay, a 2 way GPS text device is the way to go.

Have you looked at the Iridium GO! ?

It lets your cell phone text and call off satellites.

I have used a Globalstar phone for many years, and have always been happy with it. Like most phone's, the techonogy is way better today than it was a few years back. I usually set mine up for a few months during our hunting season and then never worry about touching base with my family. My Dad has also taken it all around the world and it's always performed... even saved his butt on a very cold an snowy trip to Alaska once.

I got the Garmin Mini this year for AK... will post a review after the trip. The Iridium GO looks good... but pricey... $770 + $35 activation fee +$99 a month for 200min of talk and a $1.29 per outgoing call surcharge on the plan I looked at...

That is a lot of money. I’ve used one on a hunt in the Beartooth with a buddy who guides in AK. Probably worth it for him as much as he uses it and it was probably paid for by the outfitter. That’s a lot for the regular joe.
I just own an Inreach.
