I'm thinking of relocating to Santa Fe for a job. Would anyone who lives there care to offer a sportsman's perspective on living there?

It is not far from some pretty good hunting IF you can draw a permit. Santa Fe is an exercise in people watching as it is full of weirdos. Good luck and the tip about the real estate is spot on. Nowhere I want to be.

If I could live anywhere Santa Fe would make the cut based on culture, climate, and serene beauty...and if I could live in Santa Fe I could sure afford to live well in most of the places I enjoy almost as much. Hope that makes sense...

it does and I agree

plus there is excellent elk hunting on the Indian reservations in New Mexico or was at one time, I assume it is still possible. Besides hunting in New Mexico, you will be close to Ariz, Texas, Colorado, Best of luck

Ditto, if I was more of a city person.....and my ship had come in. Almost bought a few places I looked at ,around there, 10 years ago.

Yeah @howl that’s exciting. Not sure where you’re coming from, but lots of places worse than Sante Fe. As noted above, even if you don’t draw your elk tag, you’re super close to good hunting in CO. Sounds exciting to me!

I think it's a real nice location if you have a way to make money... close to needed things and far enough away from the rest.

Good friend of mine has lived there for 25+ years. From an outdoor enthusiast perspective there is a lot to like about SF. Fishing, Hunting (with the noted caveats above on drawing tags in NM), Skiing of any variety, Hiking, good food, good weather, unique cultural mesh (from ancient peoples through the Spanish to the modern day Southwest). Said friend led the NM TU chapter for some time and works 'in the industry'.

It's always been on my wife-approved list of places we would move to - which is a really short list.

I didn't live in Santa Fe but did live in Albuquerque for some formative years (between 4-12yrs old). Actually started hunting Elk at the age of 8 and did my Hunter safety in New Mexico as a kid. I have family in the area. Santa Fe itself is nice and I have been there dozens of times. I have a few former colleagues that work there (medical field) and enjoy it. Depending on your idea of expensive housing I would say yes in comparison to the rest of New Mexico its expensive. I would say it's the Hollywood of New Mexico. All the have's live in Santa Fe. I would do some research on "New Mexico" itself. It is one of the poorest states in the nation, has a very high gang population (one of the highest in the country), not a great educational system (public schools) so if your gonna raise a family I would say that there are a million other places to reside. Santa Fe is an oasis surrounded by some pretty not so great areas (predominantly Albuquerque and surrounding areas). New Mexico in itself is an amazingly beautiful state (depending on your idea of beauty) and it is a great outdoorsman paradise. I have gone back to hunt a few times and absolutely would recommend it to anyone. My family (brother and two sisters) always complain about why I Never come down. I have a real issue with the gangs, violence, crime and drugs that absolutely infest the larger cities like Albuquerque and surrounding areas(I know its the same in other states in the nation to some extent) but it's different. Spending the years I spent there I grew up quickly. It left an impression on me and although I love the cultures great things I also despise the cultures bad things. On that note, Santa Fe itself is rich with culture, safe and robust with tourism. I would liken it to my years I spent in the military in Hawaii. Loved it for a short period of time but would never live there or raise a family there. Great place to visit, enjoy and come home.

Hopefully this doesn't hinder you from following your gut. It's just my personal view. Just my .02

Never lived there but have travelled to/visited. It's an alluring town, very scenic, food is decent, lots of homeless on the streets always stood out to me. I suppose if I could talk my wife to moving there for a couple of years I'd be all about it. Beautiful country in that part of the state. Close to great fishing, hunting, hiking. Not sure where you are moving from but I'd give it a green light. (y) Best of luck!

Thanks for the replies. Sporting opportunities sound more attractive though not as frequently available as what I am used to. I need to look more into the fishing.

I currently live near Macon, GA. It is the sort of place we don't go outside of normal business hours. We live on several acres well outside city limits. I think the referenced real estate prices will be the biggest concern. That will probably use up nearly all of the salary increase. Schools...we live in one of the better school districts in the state. We homeschool anyway. We don't have charter or magnet schools, though.
