I have a 300 PRC that is a custom build on a 700 platform. It is an amazingly accurate long range bomber. If I had to shoot across canyons I would absolutely use it. I’ve killed several elk with it and it’s just deadly.

Problem is I don’t shoot across canyons. Also not particularly fond of carrying it. I built my son a wood stocked 280ai mountain rifle and fell in love.

I have a 260ai that I am in love with as well. It shoots just shy of what a 6.5 PRC does. It will easily kill an elk.

So I’m struggling on what to do. I’ve been working with @p_ham on building a 30/06 to match the 280ai of my boys. But I don’t know if I really need it and the costs have gone up so much on a donor it’s not practical. So what to do…

Yup. Been there with my .300 as well. I sold it and am using the funds for something else.

I say sell it, use the money to fund a tikka donor and build for your ‘06 - but why not do a wildcat just for shits and giggles, .30 Gibbs or something?

Sell it and buy a 30-06 tikka. Start your build from there. Why not go 280ai yourself?

If I don’t like it or shoot it. it doesn’t deserve a place in my safe.

The PRC started as a 300 Sherman. I have all the dies and 50 pieces of brass. But with the cost of FF brass it wasn’t worth it to redo it. That brass only lasted two firings.

We have been discussing a 30-280ai. It would solely be for shits and giggles. It doesn’t offer much gain in performance and makes the cost significantly higher.

I have a ton of 30 cal stuff and everything in my safe is a Remington. A Tikka would never survive the teasing.

I don’t shoot it much but when I go to Alaska it would be the ticket. To sell it to fund another would work, I’m just having a hard time stomaching the cost to make that happen.

Pardon my ignorance, but I am curious. 30-06 > .280 Rem > .280AI > 30-280AI. Wouldn't that just be a 30-06AI?

You’re already set up to load the .280 Ackley, so to me it makes sense to get one for yourself too. I think the .270 and .280 are just about the perfect all around cartridges for North America. But I do love the .30-06 and .300 win mag as well.

It's hard for some people to wrap their head around building and shooting Remingtons. Funny. mtmuley
I have found it nice to build from the same platform. It’s just nice to have everything operating the same with the same trigger.

When I was building them I thought I wanted Mcmillian and other composite stocks. I miss the feel of a wood stock. I’m slowly switching back.
