Gastro Gnome - Eat Better Wherever

Safe queen

Pardon my ignorance, but I am curious. 30-06 > .280 Rem > .280AI > 30-280AI. Wouldn't that just be a 30-06AI?

280 Rem case has the shoulder a little forward of where 30-06, 270 case shoulders are. It's a slightly bigger case rather than a straight neck down which makes it more sad it was loaded so mildly in factory fodder as it should be the real performer of the 06 bunch with the slippery 7mm bullets.

When you AI a 06 case the material for the shoulder mainly comes from the neck. Which makes the neck shorter than it should be. By using the 280 ai brass you get a full length neck. That allows you to have the chamber deep throated and you can load the bullets all the way out in the neck. That leaves you the whole case capacity for powder.

So this kept me up last night. I saw a deal on some 300 WSM brass. I have all the parts and pieces to have Pham build me one as a Remington Sporter. I can use all the components I already have and be around 3000 fps on a 180 grain bullet.

That is originally where I was when I built the safe queen as a 300 Sherman. Recoil was right where it needed a brake. Now, that I’m rocking a suppressor I could build a WSM at 22” to use it. That would probably make a solid combo that’s more comfortable to shoot.

Struggling with the cost to loose a few inches of barrel and 150fps. 🤔🤔
