Sad state of affairs

Yeah, I buying a scope from Dave N . PayPal directed the payment to a Dave Nxxxxxxx and Dave's PayPal name is David Nxxxxxxx. No one's fault except PayPal glitch. PayPal wouldn't back it up because the $$ was sent as a gift to ditch the PayPal fees. It took about a month to get my money back.
PayPal has security features set up to protect buyers and sellers. As you would expect, the service isn't free to run. Sending money as a gift in an attempt to get out of paying for this service seems to be a contributing factor to the lack of trust. To be blunt, the guy that tells me "My word is my bond. Let's try to save a few $s and send it as a gift" is going to set off alarms for me. I am glad it all worked out for you and Dave.

Let me help restore everyone’s faith in humanity. This June, I bought a shotgun from a member here from Montana, I live in Iowa. Rather than the hassle of shipping, I asked him if he ever traveled near my friends ranch in MT. He said he did, but it wouldn’t be till later in the summer/early fall. I said perfect. I mailed him a $1200 check so he could fun his next gun purchase right away. When he had time, he dropped it off at my friends ranch, they held it for me till I made it out there this November. I had no prior dealings with this member and had never met him. I can tell you all that @Pagosa is a heck of a good guy and I’d trust him for anything going forward.
Thanks I appreciate it.

The wife in the background in these situations always makes it more interesting.

I sold a fairly expensive rifle on here a few years ago and the buyer had mentioned his wife having reservations.
(I asked for a check, not electronic payment.)

He's still tipping over elk with that rifle I hope.

The point was that the good old days of handshake deals are fading away. It's sad to me at my age that people just don't trust each other anymore. It seems everyone is looking down the road for "what if". It never used to be like that. My word, or yours was all that was needed. Now I've come to where I don't trust as much as I used to . The other guy is the same. I think it's because the younger generations have destroyed the trust in each other and it's rubbing off onto the older guys like me. That's what's sad to me.
what handshake deal. See none in your dramatic rendering of situation. Product and hard cash were to be exchanged in person. that ain't a handshake deal.

was it a product that could not be verified legit by looking at it? Was someone afraid of counterfeit dollars?

I haven't had any issues with folks on here. Met another local guy a few years ago for an ammo/brass trade and now have been on many hunts with him, he even brought the wall tent and wood stove last weekend when I said we didn't need it, turns out we did. Another guy I know wears a lot of pink and is pretty shady (...actually not shady at all!), watch out for that one too!
