Here's a picture of an Eastern Kentucky elk. This animal was taken by a Chevy. It scored 367. The KY department of fish and game allowed the driver of the truck to keep the rack.

Kyhunter42, aren't the odds of drawing a Kentucky elk tag pretty tough? A 367 bull is dang nice no matter where you are.

Doesn't that provide incentive to drive beater trucks around gunning for animals b/c you'll get to keep the antlers?

The odds are slim. Last year there was 200 tags. However this year there are 300 tags. I believe that 15,000 people applied for the tags. There is no point system. Currently it is just a random draw, but I've heard they might start point system within the next few years.

F&G has set up an "Elk Zone" that is made up of 16 counties. You can shoot any elk outside of that zone during deer season with valid license and a $30 elk tag. I've got some land that neighbors the "Elk zone", but I haven't been able to hunt it much.

Ky, good news for you guys on the "50%" (corrected precentage) tag availability "INCREASE" (corrected syntax). How fast is your herd growing?

Pa has had elk since I started hunting. (42 years ago).We have shit for a season. You guys just started a few years ago as I remember. How did your herd grow so fast?

Nice bull. Bet the truck was totaled. Heck, I hit a sheep once and the car was really messed up. Can only imagine what an elk would do.

Ummm...correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't 15,000 people applying for 300 tags come out to about 2%???

..I'm never wrong, however I'm always open to correction Guppie...50% gain in tags issued actually. 200 tags previous year...300 this year. Please excuse my Texas math.

Now carry on with your post policing.

The herd is at 5,700 now. I believe the original target was a herd of about 10-12,000. They started with 1,500 transplant elk in 1997. There is excellent habit for the elk, coupled with a very mild winter. A heavy winter snow in E. Ky is about 6" and it doesn't stay on the ground very long. Also there is zero tolerance for poachers. They are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I was talking to a biologist from F&G a few years back and we was telling me that the growth rate of the KY elk herd was 150% faster than they had predicted. He was telling me that the number of tags should increase by at least 50% a year, if not 100% until it reaches about 1500. Hopefully one day I’ll hit the lottery. It only cost $10 to apply.

You obviously don't understand Texans....
That would be an understatement.

I wasn't trying to police anyone NHY. I guess I misunderstood what you were saying. Although I am still a bit confused how you were able to do that math. I mean, any number after 20 must be difficult for you, what with running out of fingers and toes. :D

The first poacher was 20 y/o local boy. He the bull elk. Drove up to it and and a couple of his buddies started to load it up in the back of the truck. I think F&G where there before they got it loaded. The guy shot this elk in evening with about 50 watching. The was a crowd of about 50 watching all of it from another ridge. Someone there called 911 and reported it.

I know the judge dropped the hammer on him. He wanted to make an example out of this guy. I'm not sure, but I think he ended up with a felony conviction and jail time.
