rifle build-this time IT"S FOR REAL!!

Every year or so I kick the idea around about getting a new rifle (the first since 1991).
Now I have a couple grand laying around I would like to turn into a personal naildriver.
I would like advice on Barrels: whose, length, twist, finish, etc
Actions-I prefer bolt,
triggers I hear a lot of good things about Timney
, stocks wood/composite (ilike the looks of a laminate),
firing pins, etc.
I have a leupold scope I'd like to re-use. I am a bigger man but I have had my shoulder reconstructed twice so that is a concern.
Truth is I hunt deer, elk, caribou and moose. I intend to hunt sheep soon as well. I prefer 1 cartridge for all.
Any advice?

- Rem 700 or Win 70 classic action, have it blueprinted.
- 30-06 for reduced recoil or .300 something chambering.
- Krieger barrel
- Timney triggers are ok, the aluminum housing is the weak point, maybe try a Jewell.

- Don't build it ultralight if your shoulder is a concern. Borrow a ultralight rifle when you
draw your sheep tag

I'd suggest pretty much what Summithunting did. I'd use a Remington foundation, a Lilja barrel, and a composite stock instead of a laminate. A good smith can really tune a Remmy trigger, but there are a lot of options there. Personally, I like stainless, or stainless with one of the new coatings. As far as chambering, the .280 will do what you described. Alot of guys go for the AI version. Have fun. mtmuley

Take a look at McWhorter Rifles, Redhawk Rifles, Weaver Rifles, GA Precision - notice some of the components they use - GAP and McWhorter are well known to make some of the most accurate hunting rifles in the country. They use Defiance and Stiller actions typically but a Remmy 700 look alike is what almost all the good customs utilize. GAP and McWhorter are very expensive compared to the other two I mentioned. I would go with a Jewel trigger over a Timney and I own both. I'd go with a McMillan Edge stock - best hunting stock out there in my opinion. Krieger makes some awesome barrels as does Hart, Lilja, Brux, Benchmark, Douglas...if you can find a Krieger in a reasonable amount of time, I'd lean that way.

I'd be looking at .284 caliber mostly if you want a huge selection of bullets and some impressive B.C. bullets.

Can't say whether I'd use an old Leupold or not - there's sure some great new scopes these days.

I think you should be able to get into a pretty good shooting rifle for $2300+

If your budget can reach almost $3k then get a GAP non-typical in 260 rem or 7-08 and call it a day. 1/2MOA gaurentee for just a little more than an assembled custom.

700 Action - $400
Rock Creek #2 - $315
McM EDGE KS - $500
Timney - $100
Smithing (cut, crown, chamber, true action, bed &cerakote) - $1,020
Total - $2,335

My next will probably be a GAP, so easy to go turn key.

Make sure to converse with the gunsminth the bullet you would like to shoot; so that he can get the proper twist rate and be sure that the action and magazine box is long enough to get the bullet close to the rifling. I know some don't believe in seating the bullets out; but I have found that it helps and at least this way you have the option to.

That McWhorter rifles is a big sponsor on one of the new shows. Shooting less than one inch groups at 500. I was a little impressed but couldn't ever see myself spending that kind of money.

They say the parts are inter-changable with the New Ultra Light Rifles. I stopped at a Scheels in S. Dakota, and they had one in 30.06. Sweet feeling rifle. If I had time, I probably would have bought it.

Right, other than the barrel, it looks like the parts are identical, just manufactured in a plant instead of Forbes' shop.

Sort of a Mystery Ranch/Camelbak thing if I read it right.

Lone wolf stocks (changed there name can't think of it off the top of my head)
Timey triggers maybe a jewel
and Karl Kampfield to do all barrel work and skeltonizing
