Update: there will be two prelim poll threads. Top half of vote getters in each will advance to a final. You get 3 votes in each. Prelims close January 6.
When I was putting this together, I was struck by how hard this is getting. There are some great writers among us, and some incredible stories were posted in 2022. Some make you feel like you are right in the thick of the action on a hunt and a tag you’ll probably never draw. Some make you see an ordinary hunt in a new way. Some take you places you’ve never been. Some give you a new experience in old stomping grounds. But the stories that make you feel something are special.
In the (probable) case I made an egregious omission, please post a link to your write-in favorite so others can enjoy it too.
With no further ado…here is a selection of writings that struck a chord.
@trb submitted a two-part saga of muzzleloader hunting

Muzzleloader Mania - Part 1 - Foggy Bottom Bull
Season's greetings! This is the first of a 2 or 3 part mini-series of trip reports recounting my week of efforts to fill three CO muzzleloader tags: bull, buck, and bear. Join me as I chase elk through the wood with a smokepole, wearing a blaze orange tricorne hat, and playing British...

Muzzleloader Mania - Part 2 - Timber to Alpine
You can read Part 1 of my muzzleloader season recap HERE I spent the last 4 days trying to fill my muzzleloader buck tag, which I picked up to accompany the bull tag that I filled on opening day. I am on dad duty today, so although I can't post it all at once, I will try and finish the story...

@TOGIE with a recap of a season adapting to new fatherhood
Holy $#!#, I'm Tired.
I'm kinda gonna try a new style here. This will be a hunt recap of sorts, but it's been a wild year. And so, really, i'm gonna kinda call this a year recap, as my hunts were not very substantive from a story or length of time standpoint. There hasn't been much availability for me to be away...

A Proclamation of Love For A River Bottom
I have spent very little time hunting river bottoms in my life. Outside of hunting for whitetails with archery gear on Kelly Island near Missoula, when I was a student, I really had none prior to this year. With the absolute decimation of mule deer in my neck of the woods, I decided this year...

@marksjeep on a long-odds tag
San Rafael, Dirty Devil, Ram (kinda long again)
This is reminiscent of 2020, in that it all begins with a very large hit on the credit card. I spilled the beans quickly to my wife, as I have no poker face and couldn’t hide that grin if I tried. It would be a day or two until I found out which tag the State of Utah had blessed me with. My wife...

Preference points are worthless if you don't use them - WY Trip Recap
11 years ago I met a stranger from the internet at the end of a dirt road outside Kankakee, Illinois to try hunting for the first real time - enter Kurt. We both had shotguns, it was 4AM in the relative middle of nowhere, what could go wrong? I had wandered around in the woods with a .22 looking...

Go North, young man (or not so young man)
I just got home a few days ago from a 6 week trip up to Alaska. After first experiencing the state while working there during the summer of 2015 (https://www.hunttalk.com/threads/alaska-pictures.265113/), I decided that I would take every opportunity presented to return. The same group of...

@270.Rose with an oh-so-relatable story
Pronghorns, mud and lemon bars
There's a certain symbolism, unintentional, but nonetheless present, about frying the last package of breakfast sausage from last year's antelope on opening morning of the season. 2:30am should be too early to make breakfast burritos, but here I am, scrambling eggs and frying potatoes, and...

The troops are assembling for the great conquest into the mysterious cliffs of seduction. Low country boil is simmering, cold ones are being sipped, packs are being perfected in high spirits with anticipation of a grand adventure that begins tomorrow morning. Inspired by celebrated author...

Gravy Train Through High Cotton
It’s been a great ride but my tickets have been punched and my time on the gravy train is coming to an end. It’s taken me a couple days for the experiences of this fall to sink in and even now I find myself reflecting and sorting through the emotions that accompanied my hunts. First and...
