Hello everyone,

I'm a flatlander (North Missouri) looking to make my first DIY elk hunt next year with my brother. I've been on a few guided elk hunts that were really good, but I just want the adventure of going on my own and doing everything myself, so I'm looking for a possible elk hunt for 2017. I've just signed up for the Elk101 online course, and am about to dive into that.

Here's a couple key pieces of information I'm looking for:

What states/areas would you suggest looking towards?

Would you suggest OTC tags or draw? I've had a few buddies draw New Mexico tags and have really good luck, and had others do OTC in Colorado and didn't see a single elk.

I know locals spend days/even years learning these questions, and I know most don't want to giveaway this hard earned information, so I would be willing to pay someone for this information, just to get me started looking into the right area. If I could just get headed in the right direction as far as area to hunt, this would help tremendously. OR If anyone is interested in trading a hunt for Northern Missouri whitetail on 10,000 private acres that's managed specifically for mature whitetails (This is my specialty, with some absolute giants to show for it) to show me an extremely good area for elk that they have scouted, I would be interested in that as well. I can give further details if interested in trading a hunt.

Thanks Guys! And thanks for a great website! I've been reading threads for the past hour and it's all been really informative! My number is 816-805-7580. Feel free to text me if interested in either monetary payment for detailed info or trading a hunt!

After reading your thread regarding prospective elk hunting areas for your 2017 hunt I think all of us can sympathize with your situation. Not knowing which state to choose or any specific area to hunt can be the greatest initial challanges you face. However, I wouldn't offer to pay for the advice you're seeking and I seriously doubt that any member of this website would ask for any form of payment from you. Everyone here, I'm certain will be more than willing to help. After all that's what this forum is all about. So with that said, check out my pm for a couple of my suggestions.

Hannibal I'm deerman59 and posted about the same thing for myself so I would be interested in any info about a DIY hunt in Co or NM. Thanks

Sorry Bro, but I don't hunt Colorado or New Mexico. My advice for Mobowhunter 10 concerned some suggestions for Idaho in areas that I'm familiar with and have had some success. Wish I could help.

Hannibal,
If you're willing to share some knowledge, or more than anything, answer some questions I have, I would really aplreciate it. I have a group of 4 (including myself) planning a DIY hunt in Idaho next fall.

If they're about my favorite subject (Idaho) and apparently they are and they're not about my least favorite subject (football) then send me a pm anytime.

You are more than welcome to tag along with us next bow season in CO; will be a small group of us, all military buddies; hence the brotherhood handle. We call it the annual brotherhood hunt. Should be 3 vehicles launching from a different locations all meeting up in CO for the bow season. This will be our first trip but we have tons of hunting experience and are all physically capable of moving and surviving in the environment; maybe not mentally as we are all a bit crazy but I take that as a plus in any type of hunting situation. Not unsafe crazy just a little off to be jumping out of airplanes and such. Hit me back if interested and no payment of any kind is needed; might have to bring some Busch Lites if join us though.
