Portland area....

Sometime in the near future I will be flying to Portland for a day. Land in the early morning and have from mid morning to the next morning to check out a few places. I will be using Uber or similar for transport.
Any restaurants, diners or sporting goods aka hunting fishing hiking shops in the vicinity to check out? Commercial fishing supply type stores?

+1 on Fisherman's Marine. If you want a restaurant with a view look into Portland City Grill, it's on the top floor of the US Bank tower. I've only ate there once, but it was good and had a good view of the city. I'd rather get out of Portland and go check out the Columbia River Gorge or hike to some of the waterfalls in the gorge area. The gorge may not work if you're using Uber, but worth some internet exploring and then see if you want to rent a car. Many of the Oregon side waterfalls/hiking trails may still be closed from last year's fire, but the Washington side didn't burn. The Bonneville Dam and fish hatchery warrants a little internet search as well, again it may not work for Uber, but it's close to Portland and might fit your interests.

One other possibility to explore might be sturgeon fishing. I've never fished for sturgeon on the lower Columbia, so no info on hot spots, timing, guides or anything to share, but that is one interesting and potentially big fish.

fishing4sanity’s idea for going to the Bonneville hatchery in the gorge is a great one. You can actually watch the steelhead and salmon migrating up river through the “fish windows” in Bonneville Dam. There are also lots of great hiking trails close by to work off that food baby you’ll create in Portland. If you end up taking MN Public Hunter’s suggestion, got to Mt. Tabor Park, kick back in the grass, and watch the city for the afternoon. Contemplate life’s nuances.

West Marine is just off I5 downriver from the airport and might be worth a look. Not a lot of other outdoor type stores except Cabelas and REI over by Bridgeport. If you end up downtown the US Outdoors store has some quality boots and you can get Rogue Dead Guy Ale on tap next door at Mary's Club I heard...

I know I enjoyed my times in The Squirrel Cage in Wilsonville, back when I worked there for a time. They had some talent there!

Get a reservation for Salty's On the Columbia. You will be on the river. Ospreys, etc, right out your window and very, very good food including fresh seafood. No a cheap eat but if you get there about 1 hour prior to sunset on a clear day then you will not soon forget the view and food.

Portland has 100s of food carts. Over 100 in downtown and then more pods of 5 - 15 carts spread around the metro region. A few food replica carts are inside PDX with very limited menus compared to the real carts.

Powell's Books has 100.000s of used books including old books on hunting and fishing. I bought some to use with a pedestal mount of a mountain goat.

Helen Bernard's bakery near downtown has fantastic baked items including donuts. VooDoo is a tourist trap, Helen's is the real deal.

Portland has a LOT of homeless and they set up on sidewalks, grass, etc. and can be aggressive. Portland is a magnet for homeless as offer more services than the smaller outlying cities. Seattle has similar issues. Many are on drugs so when coming off a high are desperate for the next handout as they check email on their iPhone while smoking cigarettes out of a $20 a pack and with their pet dog and with their donated tent on rent-free park land. If you view them as bears and take precautions then should be okay. If feel the need to donate to their plight then donate to an organization rather than the meth addict or opioid addict.

Dont go downtown. Arguably one of the biggest crap holes in the country, and I travel everywhere for a living. I live here. Until Portland cleans it self up they dont deserve any money from you or any other visitor. Outside Portland lots of nice places to go and eat.

You can do food carts and other things without going downtown.
