Points Schemes

Just a heads up, Sunday is the last day to purchase raffle tickets for the AZ big game super raffle.

Not until they institute a raffle point system!! I am tired of investing my money and getting diddly squat. My cousin knows a lady (I never met her) that has a son-in-law (I never met him) that works with a guy (I never met him) who drew a raffle tag twice in three years and I am 0/3. We need to fix this crap now!!!

Yeah, I do know that, but too many states have made it too complicated. Just gain a point each year you lose out, and have the only other way to improve your odds should be party hunts. Buying bonus points... not a fan. I can afford it, but not all can.

I can't envision the cost of a preference point being that punitive for most folks. After all depending upon where one lives the cost to travel to and from say Wyoming far exceeds the cost of a PP. For myself I've never purchased one. After you've gotten a few you end up buying more just to protect your investment.

At our coin club meetings once a year we have a drawing for a gold coin, usually a tenth ounce gold eagle. One can buy raffle tix, or earn them by attending meetings or assisting at the club sponsored annual show. One has to have their ticket drawn 3 times to win. Last time my 3 tix were drawn in just 5 tries so as far as raffles go it's mostly dumb luck and some seem to have more of it than others.

I know that feeling, because an old guy I hunted with in Montana drew a prime moose tag years back after just a couple of years. Then he drew it again on his first shot after the 7 year wait!

The next generation is screwed no doubt about it. I'm almost glad my daughter just likes fishing and turkey hunting.

Not necessarily. My two teenage boys have a total of 2 deer, 2 elk and 3 buck antelope tags this year and that’s not counting 2 more bull elk tags they could get here in Oregon if they had the time. Granted they’ll probably never hunt moose in Utah and Wyoming like their old man got to but we have a plan for that as well. With planning there are a ton of youth opportunities out there.

I didn't read the previous 6 pages but I am sure it was entertaining.

I am fine with point systems and would say keep them. I like them because the majority of people think you need 20+points for a good hunt and that allows me to have some great hunts in the 0-3 point units on a consistent and predictable schedule.

Hard to go wrong with states like Wyoming or Arizona. Give a few tags to the high point holders while still allowing everybody else to have a chance as well. What's not to like there?

Your info is not accurate.

There is a five year waiting period for moose and bighorn sheep licenses. (A person can only have one of these licences in a five year period.)

Mountain goat and some wild bison licenses are are once in a lifetime.

Regarding antelope. The number of antelope may be down statewide, that is, the total number of antelope in Wyoming may be less now than a few years ago. However, within individual antelope hunt areas the populations may be up, down unchanged.

The demand for antelope licenses has increased greatly over the last 5-10 years.

ClearCreek

Yeah, my error for not double checking the regs for sheep n moose.

I agree. Thanks know the deer hunting in Montana has improved dramatically in areas due to game management. I think there’s always more to be done. #1 is protect and obtain more land for public access. Join a group like the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

I prefer a no points system and I am lucky enough to live in Idaho so cheers to me.

Whether other states use points systems is up to them but the downsides are well documented. I do think that states could easily transition out of points systems by allowing all currently accrued points to stand, require points to be used no matter whether you draw 1st choice or 2nd or 3rd etc. That way everyone who has points gets to keep them but they must use them on any tag that is drawn. The purpose of this would be to draw out the point holders as quickly as possible. Those who continue to hold out for the very high demand units will keep competing with each other while the mid and low tier units quickly become pure random draw with the occasional point holder giving up on the tougher odds and applying for an easier draw.

I would also support a system that creates an inter-state compact for Once in a Lifetime tags. If the states united to allow each hunter only 1 Bull Moose, 1 Mountain Goat and 1 of each Sheep species it could reduce demand and allow more people the opportunity to hunt those animals rather than have some people shoot 3 bighorns while others never have the chance.

In the meantime we must live in reality. Everyone has to decide the best value for their money and apply accordingly within the systems that are in place and advocate for change when there is opportunity for public comment/input.
