I think the craziest thing about the story is that pick axe to the head didn't kill the bear. They are some tough critters.

Yikes. I've used an ice axe on a couple of occasions and am kind of surprised he got any penetration given how light most of them are. Crazy story.

no way he reached the brain case. He struck " burying the pointy end in the bear’s skull just behind its ear." In other words, in the neck. Pretty impressive, but not lethal. Too bad they never found the bear.
