Morning all,

My blood is only at a slight simmer as I just failed to draw the Montana combo for the second year in a row. I should have done zero points last year, but didn’t know the 0 point trick until it was too late. I can’t wrap my mind around how I didn’t draw this year. In the words of the pirate character in the movie Dodgeball, “GAR!”

So, I am searching for ideas to fill the freezer. I’m in Washington, but will travel. I have my general permits in Washington, and will be putting in for special permits here.

Any ideas for meat hunts?

Sincerely, Frustrated in Spokane

Wyo will have unlimited Type 8 cow tags for several units this year. New ones are recommended this year.

At least you have your Washington tags that give you an opportunity. Might focus on those this year.

Can put in for Idaho Controlled Hunts. Not great odds for NR but if priority is meat a antler less tag may give you ok odds. There are also generally some returned OTC NR tags.

Ordered half a cow from a farm down in Spangle.

The alternative was I’d have needed to become a better hunter and that wasn’t gonna happen.

Peanut butter cookies.

Follow me here. Peanut butter is a protein source, right? So when your MTN TOUGH instructor tells you that was a high-intensity workout and you should eat plenty of protein to help you recover, you have permission to go to the freezer and eat at least 6 or 8 cookies. Even a large freezer will need to be fairly full to get you through MTN TOUGH until fall hunting seasons.

Is the focus primarily on filling the Freezer with the most cost efficient protein, or having a hunt that has a high probability of success and good meat yield?

I'm going to assume the latter.....

Option 1- Outfitter private land cow elk tag... Hotel hunt. $2850-$3000 plus travel and food. Wyoming, Idaho, New Mexico, Colorado

Option 2 - Southeast Whitetail doe management. Not my wheel house, but our school secretary's family takes a week to whack Whitetail does in Alabama. I've heard of 6 plus deer tags. There is Texas too, but not my sandbox.

Option 3 = June fishing trip to Alaska. I've been once on a day long six pack boat and I could see the potential to combine vacation with freezer filling.

Option 4 - Private land Bison shoot. Montana, Idaho, Oregon? Opinions differ if this is a hunt or a harvest.

Option 5 - Springtime Snow Goose control hunt. If you like Flying Liver...

Option 6 - Spring Bear - Idaho there are 2 bear areas in the Clearwater Region. probably not as Fat as fall bears but later season bears could plump up.

Option 7 - Escout the Weekly grocery circulars. They come to your mailbox on Tuesday and the offers are good Wed-Monday. Set target prices for the Big 6. Chuck roasts, Rib or New York roasts, London Broil, Pork Loins, Pork Shoulders, Chicken Breasts and Chicken Thighs. Load up on post Thanksgiving Turkeys. Understand what cuts are due to go on sale seasonally.
