I am happy to get this bull on a Montana "Back Country" hunt 2 and a half hours after the season opened. He was an OLD Bull! I'm thinking 15-16 years old. He had NO teeth on his upper jaw (Ivories were still "decent shape"), only had his front 6 teeth on his lower jaw AND I dulled 7 knives just cutting the meat off the bone!! Yes! He is 255 pounds of hamburger!! He had very little body fat. He was not going to make it thru another winter. I am sure he lived a very good life and I am glad to think he will not suffer another Montana Winter! He still had velvet on his antlers from malnutrition of not having teeth for proper/healthy digestion. His right Antler was damaged and had a "Trunk" growing out of his head and affected his eyesight. I cow called this fella in. Made me feel good to be able to cow call this old fella in. Figured, being that old, he knows what a cow sounds like and he came in on my calls!

I was fortunate to share this hunt with a long time friend. It only took 25 years to get him to come hunting with me in Montana. I think he might come again... Hopefully sooner!

I am still trying to wrap my mind around the "llama thing". It's been mentioned to me before... I'm old fashioned. I strap my gear on the back of a donkey and throw my leg over a horse! lol!IMG_1213.jpgIMG_4269.jpg

Are you saying he had no upper molars? I honestly have never seen that on old elk up to twenty years old.

He had only his two Ivories on his upper jaw, NO teeth at all! His lower Jaw had only his front six teeth and that is all. NO Molars at all in his mouth. So in total, Six front teeth and two Ivories in his mouth to chew with! Crazy huh?!?!?

Flying, good choice to take the old elk of the mountain, his winter would have been agonizing. Enjoyed the writeup.

Soy sauce, a little OJ, some ginger makes an easy teriyaki marinade. You can add apple cider vinegar if more tenderizing is on the menu.

I do feel “better” about knowing he won’t suffer/struggle through another winter. I am sure he lived a long and good life!

Yea... I have added 20% pork shoulder and I’m thinking I’m going to make some Summer Sausage, Pepper Sticks and a lot of Hamburgers! 278 pounds after the grind! Lots of options!

Yes! Weary reader, I tried some of the Tender Loin, VERY chewy. The whole thing went through the grinder.
