odds on drawing nonresident ewe/lamb sheep tags

Hunting Bighorn rams is not going to happen in my lifetime, barring some miracle. But I was eyeballing the license prices and noticed that ewe/lamb tags for a nonres are $240. Does anyone know what the odds are of drawing such a tag? I can't find it on the G&F website - only Type 1 licenses that require north of 20 pp. I'd like to at least eat a sheep. I might go for a ewe, but is it viably probable?

It certainly seems from what I see on the boob tube is that the experience of sheep hunting itself is awesome. I'm in to hear what experienced opinions say.

There are a couple units in CO that you can draw every 0-3 years.

That said, if you want a high alpine hunting experience why not get a Deer tag. During Muzzy or early rifle they are at the same elevation or higher.

I would recommend that for just alpine hunting but there is still something special about chasing sheep in those places

I got lucky 3yrs ago and drew a RMBH ewe tag here in New Mexico. The hunt did not disappoint. 21mile round trip harvested at a lil over 12k feet. The experience was worth it. I also look at it the same way you do, I may never draw a ram tag but I at least got to hunt sheep. The meat was amazing too and because of the hard work I think it tasted much better. I gave some to my taxidermist and he said it was night and day difference from a ram. Much better! I don't know if I could burn 20 points on a ewe but if you draw it random or under 5 points id say it's worth it!

That looks like a WY price tag. I'd say the odds of a NR drawing a Wyoming ewe tag are zero - because none are offered. If you look at the past NR drawing reports you will see only Ram or Any Sheep tags.

Nevada has a few ewe tags for nonresident.

Utah has a non resident ewe tag this year for non resident.

My daughter killed a ewe last year by Tonopah. The hunt was fun, but not sure it could replace a ram? I told my daughter to treat it as a once in a lifetime memory and also got the ewe mounted for her. I am also buying points for the ewe hunt and hope there are still tags available here for whenever I draw my ram tag, (fingers crossed) I can chase ewes after to go along with the ram.

I am not sure i would go after a ewe more than once.

It’s totally possible. I just drew an ewe tag in Co this year with one point.

There were 7 NR rifle ewe licenses issued in CO this year in 6 hunt codes. One was drawn by the single NR that applied for it 2nd choice. The worst odds were 7 applicants for 1 tag.

In total there were 21 first choice NR ewe applications for 7 licenses, so if you apply in CO you better be prepared to spend $2,200+.

If you want to hunt sheep, there are tons of possibilities. Get out there and do it.

Washington started a separate category for juvenile ram, so everyone started with 0 points this year in that category. It's too late this year, but you'd only be 1 point back of everyone next year.

For 2200 bucks I’ll put you up in a high class suit for two night let you shoot a ewe at 400 yards send it back on dry ice and we’ll all be happy. Domestic ewe of course.

Montana has ewe tags as well- It'll run you $1250 for the tag as a non-resident. You will need to apply by May 1st next year, but can buy a bonus point this summer yet. Units rotate for Non-resident availability, and you'll be limited to 10% of the total tags, but the current units with Ewe tags are: 124-30 (Paradise: 2 tags), 203-30 (Grave Creek: 7 tags), 216-30 (W. Rock Creek/Quigg Creek: 8 tags), 482-30 (Fergus: 40 Tags), 622-30 (Middle Missouri Breaks: 20 tags), 680-30 and 680-31 (Chouteau-Blaine-Phillips: 80 tags total). 157 Total Ewe tags.

True that- The unlimiteds offer the adventure of a lifetime! If you're in it for the meat, maybe spend your $1250 elsewhere, but if you want to go sheep hunting and have the possibility of coming home with one of the most prized trophies in North America, IMO, than head over to the UL thread and start reading in between breaking in your boots.
