No Masks....Would you?

Obviously I don't speak for everyone, but to keep hearing mask-wearers categorized as fearful, scared, etc...goodness. I wear them because people smarter than me said it keeps those around me safer, and I feel good about that. I dont think those generalizations are applicable to all, or perhaps most, mask wearers.

Personally I'm not there yet. I think this should be directed to the employees of the restaurant. Do they feel comfortable in a packed house with no masks? I'm a little perplexed as to why governors are repealing the mask mandate now. They've already been locked down for months, and if all goes well, the vast majority of the country will be vaccinated in the next couple of months. While COVID numbers are going down, they're still pretty high.

1) You’re the one who determined that those people were smarter than you.
2) Whether they are smarter than you or not, many other people with similar credentials have said the exact opposite from 1918 to 2019, and many continue to do so even today.

Haha, very true. My wife and I have the same debate almost daily. I call her a fearmongerer, she calls me "reckless". We still love each other 🥰.
I’m happy for you two. Whenever I see one spouse masked and the other not masked, I sure do wonder if the home life is going ok.

I got yelled at the other day by someone in there car deiving past wearing a mask alone, for not wearing mine, I was standing outside a local business waiting for someone literally nobody within probably 25 ft of me. Mind blown as well.
What blows my mind is that I have not worn a mask from day one, and yet NOT ONE person who was not an employee has said a single word to me about it. I really expected to get some shaming and push back.

"Wear the mask. For the sake of our family wear the mask!"
*throws mask at husband's face*
"I'm a wild stallion! You're not gonna bridle me with that mask!"
*slaps husband*
*husband stops other hand from slapping*
*wife pushes him against the wall, kisses him passionately*

Pretty much every night.

Wow!

In nine years I have had one argument with my wife. It wasn’t as exciting as yours.

You guys must not have kids, too much time on your hands. Mine goes like this-

Wife- you want to I gotta a 5 minute window between filling bottles and laundry I think I can stay awake for you.

I think the mask has run it’s course. If people are scared of the virus, it is probably best to isolate and just stay home. I will go anywhere but overseas, and not worry about it.
Kind of funny that you wouldn't go over seas. With a few exceptions the rest of the world is safer from Covid than we are.
Masks in restaurants never made sense to me. You can't eat with a mask on so either don't require masks or don't allow restaurants to be open. I guess my opinion doesn't matter though since I almost never go to restaurants anyway. I find it strange when people complain about their freedom of choice being violated when it comes to masks. wearing a mask in public places barely reaches the level of an inconvenience when compared to restrictive laws like not driving after a few drinks or not being allowed to run over bicyclist that insist on riding down the center of the lane. Most laws are designed to restrict our freedom of choice in order to protect others from our stupidity and selfishness. We mostly accept that as necessary for living in a civil society. One thing I just thought about on my morning dog walk today was that winter is pretty much over and for the first time in I don't know how long I haven't even had a cold. I may just keep wearing masks even after this Covid stuff is over. Two weeks of feeling like crap is far more inconvenient than wearing a mask around people I don't really want to be around anyway.

Not being glib,

I just got home from a 5 western state road trip and experienced a lot of mask shaming from both sides. I encountered radicals on both sides of this. We walked out of businesses because they looked down their un-masked noses at us. Their rights cost them money. Sometimes we are so focused on our rights we forget everyone has rights.

We walked into a bar with our masks on and the conversations stopped like something out of a bad movie. Hard liquor and cigarettes take longer than COVID, but they'll get you there just the same.

Right now our nation can't decide on whether the toilet paper should feed off the top or the bottom. Everything in our lives is now distilled into Red vs Blue. Even in that debate both extremes call you a traitor if you aren't flying their flag or wearing their t-shirt. (BTW - If you were a Halo gamer, you'll get a kick out of the Red vs Blue youtubes.)
I hear you.

The first was during a hockey tournament in Jackson. Stopped at a small shop in the town square and the lady behind the counter started screaming at my wife that the metal bridge of her mask was not tight enough across the bridge of her nose. We dropped the stuff we were waiting to buy on the counter and walked out. I may have mentioned to the lady that I thought there was a better use for her mouth than screaming as we walked out but largely we left with no drama.
There you go - If you are gonna chase off customers, you are an idiot. It doesn't matter if your flag is red or blue.

Now the thread has devolved to mask porn. Let's talk about cheese.

Exactly!

I never stopped wearing a mask. Even after getting both shots. I do it to protect others. Not for myself.

The shots don't protect us from getting the virus. It protects us from getting really sick and having to go to the hospital. With the shots I can still get the virus but show no symptoms. However, i'm still contagious and could give the virus to someone else.

Regarding point 1: I like to think coming to this sort of determination is not unique to myself; that is, those who make a career in a different field than myself are more knowledgeable in that particular field.

Regarding point 2: I don't disagree that people with similar credentials have opposing views, even with some evidence to prove. But for fields that I am not an expert in, I tend to agree with what the majority of the experts in that field agree with.

So at what % of population is herd immunity achieved?
It's not entirely known, Measles is 95%, Polio 80%.

For arguments sake let's call it 80%

Here is my informed WAG;

Assumptions

Cases (antibodies) + Vaccination = Immunity

Cases I got from CDC, obviously there is not a consensus about whether these numbers represent total cases. Therefore I did cases, 2x the number of cases and 10x the number of cases.

Vaccination, I used have been given 1 dose. There isn't great info on what just one dose does, and only 5% of people are getting J&J currently.

Antibodies + Vacciantion, I assumed for this graph there was zero. This is total garbage, who knows the rate, I bet it's high.

I think the "Possible Immunity Double Cases" is probably on the extreme high end of where we are currently, and that we could be a bit below the "Possible immunity"

My WAG is that on March 25, 2021 we are between 30-40%. There are likely communities at 80% and others at <5%.

The majority on Jan 1st 2020, or the majority on May 1st 2020? There weren’t any wonderful studies done during that window, but there was a complete reversal of public stances on masks by prominent medical folks. There were also numerous studies from 1918 to 2019 that never convinced any medical professional to encourage mask wearing during a pandemic. Furthermore, most Asian countries have had extremely high rates of mask wearing for decades, and they also have very similar rates of viral respiratory illnesses to the rest of the world.

I’m not trying to beat you up for one position or the other.

Many countries are safer, but many highly developed European countries are not. Currently Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland, Poland have more daily new cases per capita than the US. Even Norway is now even with the US. EU as a whole has nearly double the daily new cases per capita as the US. The vaccine rollout has been slow in Europe.

Good time to go to Russia, China, or Africa! Europe? Not so much.
