Nice rifle for a teenager to pass down

After doing some research and going through my gun cabinet, I think I'm going to go down the road of switching out some components on my Remington 700 ADL .308 for something suited for my son. I've shot multiple deer with it but after buying a Seekins 7mm Rem Mag, I have been primarily using it for deer. The .308 has just been sitting dormant in the gun cabinet. I'm going to replace the choate stock that seems like it weighs a million pounds (target stock anyways) especially for my son and possibly get it rebarreled or have the barrel threaded for the potential use of a suppressor/brake in the future if he would want to. For good measure, I'm probably going to pick up a timney trigger or something similar to swap out while I'm at it.
Save your money--put a lightweight stock on it and if you are shooting for less recoil keep the 308--which is very versatile--and buy reduced recoil ammo for it.

That's my stock advice for kids--a gun they can grow into without switching anything but ammo choice. The reduced recoil stuff works well and for deer is more than adequate while shooting near the same point of aim. If length of pull gets too short as they grow you can put a slip on cover to gain a bit more length.

How about a Ruger 1B in 6mm Remington since you reload! You would have to find a used one but man are they great rifles. I have one and love it in 6mm Remington. It shoots great, is nice to carry, and is gorgeous. I also have the same model in 30-06. Same same as indicated. There are other Ruger single-shot models out there and they all are nice.

Or you can go with a new one. They are making these in 308 currently!! Glad I can help.

Here's a 275 Rigby (7x57)! Great cartridge for everything up to moose and elk, and mild recoil.

6.5 Creedmoor (ManBun), but hey it is an accurate do most everything cartridge. I'd like it in the 6.5PRC a bit better but hey Ruger is making them right now!

Here's my 1B in 6mm Remington for comparison.

You can't predict what a kid will do down the road. A rifle you both use together is most likely to stay with him.

So, make that 308 something you actually want to use, with easily adjustable stock length for when you hunt together.

Just a suggestion. For not a ton (guess it depends on your definition of ton) more, you could have the local HT gun guru p_ham build a custom gun for you. He and I have traded emails and his prices are/were very reasonable. Just sayin!

I have slightly different thought process for you to consider. When I was of age, my dad took me to Cabelas to buy me my first shotgun. I held several but he handed me an 870 Wingmaster. He talked about how great they were, how he always wanted one, etc. It was my choice which gun I was going to get...he just guided me to the one he wanted me to have. To this day it's the one gun I'll never get rid of.

The idea of him getting to choose his own, with a heavy dose of fatherly input...might be something to consider.

OR

Get some custom engraving done on it. A family quote, a phrase you sue often, etc. Something he will look at years from now and be flooded with memories.

Whatever you get him will be of sentimental value to him and someday perhaps, 'his'. Lineage transfer is valuable but so is a blank tablet. It's a cool quandary. I especially savor the tools I see my son operate better than I ever could.

Letting him pick his own was kind of where we were initially. He is only 10 so he was kind of wanting to pick things that looked cool and I had to nudge him in a direction that would make sense whether it was the quality of rifle, barrel, trigger etc. We had sorted through multiple brands from Win Model 70 (Have one passed down from my dad in .264), Seekins PH3 (Have a PH2), Tikka UPR or a Bergara both of which I have no experience with.

I messaged p_ham for suggestions and to gather some info. Seems like he does some great work. I will keep him in mind for sure.

We are in the process of deciding on what stock to use. I initially thought of an HS precision but he said he wants something with a detachable magazine which they have but the bottom metal by itself is almost $300 not including the stock. I'm stuck between a McMillan Game Warden 2.0/Game Scout or a Magpul Rem 700 stock.
