Save your money--put a lightweight stock on it and if you are shooting for less recoil keep the 308--which is very versatile--and buy reduced recoil ammo for it.After doing some research and going through my gun cabinet, I think I'm going to go down the road of switching out some components on my Remington 700 ADL .308 for something suited for my son. I've shot multiple deer with it but after buying a Seekins 7mm Rem Mag, I have been primarily using it for deer. The .308 has just been sitting dormant in the gun cabinet. I'm going to replace the choate stock that seems like it weighs a million pounds (target stock anyways) especially for my son and possibly get it rebarreled or have the barrel threaded for the potential use of a suppressor/brake in the future if he would want to. For good measure, I'm probably going to pick up a timney trigger or something similar to swap out while I'm at it.
That's my stock advice for kids--a gun they can grow into without switching anything but ammo choice. The reduced recoil stuff works well and for deer is more than adequate while shooting near the same point of aim. If length of pull gets too short as they grow you can put a slip on cover to gain a bit more length.
