New 30-06. Thinking about trying copper.

Since it shot thar good, just run a dry patch through the bore before you shoot your ammo, for zero. Then don't clean it again until the groups open up. ha

Wow! I take it you mean the case was stuck in the chamber? Or was the bullet stuck as well (as in a squib load where the powder doesn't ignite). Just curious.

Glad Kimber re-barrelled it for you!
Yes, case was stuck in the chamber and would not eject.

It was not "finished reamed", i.e., short chambered. It was a "Friday Afternoon" Rifle! ha We all have either seen or heard of one, pretty common nowadays, unfortunately.

Since this thread was brought back to the top, I’ll give an update. The first round I shot through the gun would not eject. It was stuck in the chamber. I had to run a cleaning rod down the barrel to force it out. Second round did the same thing. I had to send it back to Kimber. They re-barreled it and sent it back. Including in the box were the targets they used when testing the new barrel. It took me a while to find the ammo they used, but I was finally able to score a few boxes. I haven’t shot it yet, but I’m excited to already know what ammo groups well out of it. View attachment 340758
That's Great.
I've always had good shooting Kimbers , they did what I expected.
Continue the barrel break in that they started, shoot 2- 3 rounds clean and repeat. Good for you. 👍

@Southern Elk how about an update? I’m very curious as to how this turned out this season.
The Kimber had to be sent back. See post #59. While I was waiting for it to come back and not knowing what the outcome would be, I happened to find a Winchester Model 70 Featherweight in 30-06. It is a dream rifle of mine and I couldn’t pass it up. I already had some Nosler 165 partitions for it and it turned out to be a shooter. Here’s a 100 yard 3 shot group after I got the scope dialed in.

I ended up using the Winchester and taking a bull a couple weeks ago.

I found the copper ammo that Kimber used to test the new barrel. I haven’t fired it since getting it back. At this point I don’t know if I will keep it or not. The Winchester has become my favorite rifle.

Kimber makes a great pistol. 10 mm. mtmuley

Handloaded 30-06 ammo, not factory, but great results:

30-06 Remington 700 CDL 24" Rem barrel. Three shots at 100 yards. Hornady 165 grain CX bullets and H4350 for 2860 fps and real tight single digit SD numbers. Took a small black bear at about 65 yards with one shot. Of course no bullet was recovered, it penetrated right through as expected. Quick kill though.

Three shots at 100 yards, 30-06 Savage with the 130 grain Barnes TTSX - which also does a fine job on game. Factory Savage rifle in a Boyds laminate stock. Handload used Varget for 3200+ fps, and yes this is a "book" load published by Hodgdon.

The good ol' 30-06 and modern copper bullets can really get with the program and produce fine results.

WOW CONGRATULATIONS. 👍

What is everyones favorite solvent that is kind to barrels but removes copper efficiently? I currently use Hopes #9

Step by step guide to getting monos to shoot well:

1. Get some of this stuff, Birchwood Casey bore scrubber. Saturate a patch, swab your bore, leave it for a few minutes and then run a dry patch. May have to do this 2 or 3x if your bore hasn't been cleaned in a while.

2. Try your copper ammo. Most quality rifles will shoot either Barnes TTSX, Federal trophy copper or Nosler E Tips around MOA if you're using factory ammo.

3. If your rifle doesn't like either of those, try Hammer bullets handloaded with whatever powder Steve recommends. Starting 50 thousandths off the lands is usually the ticket.

Only ever seen one rifle that wasn't in good hunting shape after the above.

The 30-06 and Barnes 168 gr are a match made in heaven…

+1 on this. I've harvested two Nilgai bulls with my M70 in '06 shooting 168 TSXs, and both were easy retrievals. For anyone that knows Nilgai, even the dudes shooting ultra mags are far from guaranteed to find their animals, much less to watch them go down as was the case with both my bulls. Truly do believe the 168 TSX out of an '06 the best combo out there for elk, exotics, bears etc

I have a new 30-06 that I don’t have much ammo for. I’ve never shot copper bullets, so I thought this might be a good time to try some. I will be using this as an all around rifle for elk, deer, and pronghorn. Any recommendations on some factory ammo that I could try? What grain bullet would you suggest?
Older thread but I've gotten great results with the Barnes factory loads and the Hornady Outfitter line with the 150 gr CX
