Wasn't this area of Nevada some of Claude Dallas's stomping ground?

Generally, yes. Not sure the exact location, but Claude Dallas spent a lot of time in Paradise Valley.

Edit. I wasn't sure on exactly where Delong's ranch was. Read more. That's 40 or 50 miles farther west of where Claude Dallas was.

My wife's parents live north of Winnemucca.

We live quite rural too. Odd stuff can happen even in the sticks

When I saw the thread title, I thought this was going to be another story about the Bundy family.

It is sad, and sobering, to hear that something like this happened.
