headed out on a black bear hunt in two weeks. using archery equipment and wondering which set up is better.

1st- 72 lb bow(8 yrs old), aluminum arrow with 100 gr. spitfire 3 blade.

2nd- 50 lb bow(2 yrs old), carbon arrow with 125 gr. steel force fixed 3 blade.

i know bothe set ups would kill a beer but at the moment of truth what set up would you use.

Which ever one you feel more comfortable with sould be my answer I guess. I like the spitfire broadheads but not aluminum arrows. I like carbon arrows but not the 125 gr. steel force. A 50 lb bow is too light and a 72 lb. bow is a little too heavy for a hunting situation, for me. I'd say it's just personal preference, but you're right they'll both kill a bear.

thanks for the reply. i love the 50 lb bow, i have killed 4 deer with it, all pass throughs from 10-30 yrds. i have been shooting the 100 gr. 2 blade fixed for it. someone recommended i should go up to a 3 blade fixed 125 gr. for bear and i bought the steel force broadheads.

i know about carbon vs. aluminum, but on my other bow(72lb) i purchased 2 dz. arrows a couple of years ago and it shoots great with alot of success with the 100 gr. spitfires.

just looking for some insight on which is the better setup.

I guess I would have to go with the 50 lb. setup you have. You've killed with it and sounds like you are confident with this bow. Bow hunting is 90% mental and 10% luck (lol). My setup is an older mathews, 67 lbs., carbon arrows, and cutting tip 100 gr. spitfires. My confidence is built up in this bow and I passed through an elk at 40 yards recently.

I agree

Shoot the one you have the most confidence in .
I would also go to a 3 blade I feel like it makes a better hole and does not seel up as fast . Bears are pretty easy to kill but they often leave very little blood do not give up be sure when you shoot and just know you hit it good
MAKE SURE you give TIME . Not only does the hair soak up a lot of blood but the fat will seal the cavity and just allow loss of blood inside , thus leaving little or no blood . This is quite common .
Even if you are with an outfitter or not do what you know is right you will be the one playing all out in your mind for a long time if you loose the animal.
Hope you have a super time and good luck.

thanks idaho smiley, i am confident with bothe set ups but they are different. just wondering what people think is a better set up between the 2 that i have. sounds like you have been there before, which one would you choose.

Me

I woulg go the smaller one . I can shoot confidently at more angles with being able to draw at any angle at that poundage . To me it is not so much a poundage issue it is an arrow and broadhead issue. As a well placed shot will kill from either. What kills deader a 338 or a 270:D
