My son plans on letting his elk Wyoming points go,

Not really sure what your intentions were when you started buying points then.

If you can't find a Wyoming antelope hunt with 10 points, then I agree, you should let them go.
I'm just sayin things change no matter how many points you have and it's cheaper to let them go then hunt. I might go I might not...as I stated I'm considering it. It's all a numbers game for me...lose 700-800 or spend another $2500 plus to go hunting....as I stated...things can change after you start buying at any time.

You should do a Ted talk on this

Why does it cost $2500 to go hunting?

People really need to stop this points game and screw the game and fish. It's way cheaper to let them go then go on a hunt these days, I don't blame him at all. I have like 10 or 11 deer and lope points each and I'm thinking about just letting them go...cheaper in the long run then giving these western states even more of my money.
cheaper has nothing to do with it. you only have so many years to hunt. the occasional better or “great” hunt is worth the extra expense to those seeking quality experiences.

Why does it cost $2500 to go hunting?
This is for 2 separate years for 2 different hunts and based on todays costs...these may change....1 deer and 1 lope.

$375-400 for the tag....
$500 hotel, $100 a night?
$350-500 for gas.

This is per hunt on todays' costs....as you can see I did not put food, cause I know how y'all always say you have to eat...

So....add that up...$400+500+350 = $1250....times 2....

And yeah, I get it....I can sleep on the ground and save some of the $500...I don't live close, it costs money to hunt....

I'm done explaining this....I said what I need to say. I get why the OP's kids wants to let the point go....it is what it is....It costs less if I let the points go then to hunt...period....

Priorities change...so does life and such...rules...money....etc.etc..etc...

I’m willing to bet there are some forum you post that on you will get cash offers to party app. Wasn’t it Monster Mulies who was known for that kind of shenanigans?
I remember a thread like that here years ago. That one of course headed south quickly.

Sounds like you need to do yourself and the rest of a favor and let your points go.

Age discrimination is inherent in every preference point system resulting in the Max Point class gifted with unearned out-sized odds over subsequent participants prevented by law from earning points in Year One of the system due to age or not even being born.

Those out-sized odds continue year after year. Casinos do not vary odds around the craps table based on when you first entered the casino. Any player’s odds on the next roll of the dice are the same as the person who started playing before or after that person.

When you buy a lottery ticket do you get out-sized odds because you played the prior week? Nope. Try moaning and complaining to the state lottery commission. They will laugh at you. F&G commissions and legislatures are spineless so they create bad policy such as point systems.

Idaho and New Mexico are fair. Wyoming is milking your soon. He is good at math. Either burn the points then walk away or just walk away. Those odds are 100%.

My dad walked away from 5 DEA points this year. Said he didn’t want to fool with them anymore. Nothing could change his mind.

Whatever.

If he is not interested in hunting elk might as well let them go. With the prices of tags these days why burn that money on something he is not interested in?

If he's not interested, and he wants tonlet them go, its his choice really. Chasing points isn't what everyone wants to to do.
^^^This^^^
Perhaps the son isn't as enamored of hunting as the father. It should be the sons choice if he doesn't want to keep buying points.

I recommended dad buy the point. At 20 years old he is either super busy with college and chasing tail. Or working as an apprentice somewhere and chasing tail. He is keeping his deer and antelope points, so he likes hunting. If the boy was 25 years old and wanted to drop the elk points chase I'd say let him. At 20 I think I would step in until I thought for sure he wasn't interested. Cheap insurance for the next couple of years to buy the point.

Maybe i'm the only one on the forum that did stupid stuff when I was 20?

I made stupid choices when I was 20 that I regret in my 30s. One of them was not buying points in CO. I’d have enough for a damn good hunt by now, probably wouldn’t be airing by dirty laundry about not bagging my first big game animal either.

Im 8 years deep buying my kids points. My daughter had WY deer, elk and pronghorn points but I let them go once she was 18 and the cost jumped. Was a risk that she wouldnt hunt but I was happy to take that risk. My son has 4 points in WY and drew a Gen elk tag in the random draw this year lol hopefully he enjoys this years hunt and wants to return and start burning points next year!
