Any of you shroomers out there care to share some of your knowledge with a rookie?

I was hiking in an area this morning that had a good fire last year. Forest Service posted it as a non commercial mushroom harvest area. It's in the 7000 to 8000 foot range with mostly lodgepole and spuce forest. Grass was just starting to sprout. Didn't see any mushrooms but didn't look too hard either. Is it too early? What are the best areas to focus on? Any good links to places with good information? Thanks!

Sounds early to me. I just found my first ones at around 4000 to 5000 ft last week. Some of the ones I found were very small, so I think this week will be really good at my spots.

So where do you guy's like to look? Moderate burn areas or more intense? Any particular facing slopes better than others? Moist areas or dry? Once they start coming up, how long does the season normaly last? Do you pick morels only or are there other mushroom varieties you pick as well?

Thanks

Paul

I can only go on the info I've slowly picked up over time...

Around fairly new burns is where most seem to go.

A check with some of the local "ologists" would probably give you a good start on places to search out
