Hi all,

looking to take a small pack of dogs out west in 2022 and chase a mtn lion. Wondering if anyone knows a good podcast or other resource that helps explain the tag options and ability to run with hounds in western states? Lots of resources for tags and other things when it comes to deer and elk but not mountain lion. If not, I’ll just dig through each F&G website and write it all down. Just looking for a shortcut :)

Montana has a separate Mountian Lion reg book. There's also the Montana Houndsmen Association. I would think other states have a similar one.

Idaho is draw only for out of state hound hunters, and it is not an easy draw.

Add in the new quotas, or lack thereof, and it will be hard. It’s going to knock the piss out of the lion in Idaho. Tracks are already hard to find. Now they’re gonna be even harder to find.

Nevada might be a good option for you, no special regs on hounds, OTC tags, long season. Obviously look into everything yourself, I'm not aware of a one stop shop for info though, probably have to look at each state individually.

WY allows hounds. I hate cats so kill’m all. Here’s a link to the cat regs and such. Just scroll down until you see the cat info.

Wyoming tags are OTC but we have mortality quotas in some areas.
Interesting part of Wyoming's regs, maybe other sates have this too, not sure :

(c) After a mountain lion has been pursued or bayed, a properly licensed person shall promptly harvest or release the mountain lion. No person shall in any manner restrict or hinder the mountain lions ability to escape for the purpose of allowing a person who was not present at the time the mountain lion was bayed to arrive and take the mountain lion.

Nevada has a similar law. You jave to participate in the entire hunt basically.
