MT application, not wanting the tag?

To update, I called Montana FWP and spoke to a license specialist. He explained that if I do not apply this year, I will be reset to 0. If I then go in and purchase a point in the summer, I will have 1 point. In my 2024 application I can purchase a point as I apply giving me 2 points.

Essentially if I do not apply this year but do apply in 2024, I can go into 2024 application with 2 points.

I don't know about everyone else but it took me weeks to get my head around the MT draw changes, and how I can make it work for a return hunt in a couple of years. Problem is once the regs change again my strategy will probably be voided. Oh well, gives me something to do during application season!

Am I reading this wrong, you'd pick up a point this year (in the summer purchase window0, for 1 point next year (2024) you won't draw in 2024 with one point giving you +1 for 2025?

Okay, and is this a 23-24 thing, or when I bought my point last summer, I had 1 point going into today's deadline....did I add one prior to the draw by paying the preference fee on my app? Or is this going forward change?

Well then you’ll draw this year cuz you’ll have 2

In my understanding, yes. If you purchased one last summer, then also added the 100 bucks to your app, you are now in the draw with 2. Very slim chance you won’t draw.

i have zero base points and also 5 elk and 4 deer points

I can apply and opt in and thus go into draw with 1 base points and zero chnce of drawing the elk/deer combo? I would like to be able to add elk/deer points and set myself up for next year drawing a combo. thanks.

If I applied and did not opt in I would have a chance to draw as there is a set aside for zero point folks but if opt in no chance?

but if you do not apply now you also have no ability to add to your elk points so miss a year of building those up? complicated chit.

If you apply and opt out now, you can buy one in summer and opt in on 2024 app and go into 2024 draw with 2. If you don’t apply in 2023, you lose any accumulated but can buy one in 2023 summer, then you could opt in in 2024 and go into draw with 2

Jeez. I have been applying for tags and points in numerous states for 30 years and MTs deer/elk system is the only one that has me stumped. I’m a huge advocate for nonresident discrimination on both quotas and license fees. But in a sane, fair predictable and understandable manner. Buying general licenses you may not want through a byzantine difficult to understand system with 80% gen lic refunds if you draw to get into limited draws is none of that.

Rant over. For now. Lol.

let me see if I have this right. Last year with zero pref pts I had a decent chance of drawing a gen license. This year with one pref pt I have no chance of drawing if I don’t buy another pref pt when I apply. If I buy a pref point when I apply I have a pretty good chance of drawing a gen tag because I will have 2pts in the draw?

Just a heads up. If you choose to not participate in the preference point at the time of application, you cannot buy one later. Learned that the hard way.

I have zero pref pts. If I chose to not participate at all, now, I can still buy a pref point AND a BP later on?

Just trying to be certain on my chioices as I want to gain 1 pref point and one BP this year bit do ot want to draw till next year.

I was gonna apply and opt in on point now to get me to one and thus not be in the random, but no sense forking over tag fees now…LOL MT loves and hates nonres all at once with this scam schema
