MT application, not wanting the tag?

Can someone help me with this process for MT elk? I should draw a WY tag this year. With the recent changes in MT and having to apply for an elk tag is there a way i can apply but not draw and use my points. This is new to me and i hate to draw and return it for 80%. Thank you!

Nope, if you don’t apply you lose your point. Only way to get a full refund is to miss out on the combo. It’s a complete farce scam.

I can agree with that if your primary choices to get a burger were:

1. 1 McD burger every 2 years for $40 (MT)
2. 1 white castle burger every year for $20 (Colorado)
3. 1 Culvers burger every 6 years for $25 (WY)
4. A chance at a $25 wendy's burger every year but you have to wait all day and if they dont run out of burgers before it's your turn they probably don't have the one you want. Your friends/family have to go take their chances at a different wendys location (ID)
5. In-n-Out burger for $300 (auction / landowner tag)

Just a heads up. If you choose to not participate in the preference point at the time of application, you cannot buy one later. Learned that the hard way.

You get 2 tags for that...I went special in WY last year for elk with 4 points tag alone was $1400..MT bg combo is deal compared to that. Next year with special fee increase WY it will be even better deal. Add to the fact I have a 74% chance of drawing a gen bg combo with zero pp..I can also hunt MT more often.

OP go into the draw with one PP you won't draw.

I have one point right now. (If I bought before the draw I would have 2) So you are saying that I can defer my points and go into the draw and return to draw the tag next year with my two points? I won’t lose points?
I do t have the time to go this year, but will next year.

You’ll have to apply - just don’t buy a pp . If applying for the big game combo , you won’t draw with 1 . So then next year buy one at time of app and you’ll most likely draw with 2

To update, I called Montana FWP and spoke to a license specialist. He explained that if I do not apply this year, I will be reset to 0. If I then go in and purchase a point in the summer, I will have 1 point. In my 2024 application I can purchase a point as I apply giving me 2 points.

Essentially if I do not apply this year but do apply in 2024, I can go into 2024 application with 2 points.
