Hello, I've prior military service time and I retired from the Forest Service as a wildland Firefighter. I've hunted a long time in California, 55 years, and have experienced the changes in culture, politics and how it affects California Fish and Wildlife (formerly California Department of Fish and Game) and the way the department does business and how the changes affects the way I hunt. Anyway, I'm doing my homework: reading the posts, studying the NMFG website - as it is known as for the moment and studying the units, maps, etc.
Respectfully,

First off welcome to HT!

I'm going to say some unpopular things because people will say they are untrue, but they are wrong.

1) NM is absolutely amazing. It was one of my favorite assignments that I ever had. Explore every inch of it, learn as much as you can about it, eat everywhere you can at the local joints, and HAVE FUN!

2) You can still knock on doors and gain access to properties. With OTC deer and antelope, if you make the right friend or foster the right relationship, you could have a deer and antelope tag in your pocket EACH YEAR. Key in on making the right friend and relationship. Most of the farmers and ranchers I met and got access to denied plenty of guides/outfitters, etc. They don't need the money. Friends and good relationships though.... those are priceless!

3) Actually apply math towards your applications. You are going to hear so many people talk about how they haven't drawn tags in years, the system is rigged, and all the non-resident big money guys somehow draw your resident tags in the application pool. What I have found is use math to your advantage and make sure you're actually optimizing ALL THREE options on your application. Not shooting yourself in the foot by putting the wrong order.

Last and most certainly not least - It's Blakes not Lotaburger.

I'll have to think about the correct formula and/or Google the question; can you please help with the formula? I'm considering factors like: how many tags available for the unit, previous number of applicants, and how many tags awarded??? Anyway, I would appreciate some guidance.
Thank you
