Overpopulated herds have triggered die-offs.All the more reason not to shoot ewes.
Look, I appreciate all of the work that the biologists and everyone is doing with bighorn sheep. But you can’t convince me that we should be shooting ewes with the sad state of the population. There are other alternatives. What we are currently doing is not working.Overpopulated herds have triggered die-offs.
You should have showed up in Bozeman a couple weeks ago and voiced your opinions, and heard what is being done on the ground right now.Look, I appreciate all of the work that the biologists and everyone is doing with bighorn sheep. Maybe try getting your facts straight. No question young rams travel, so do old rams. I found the oldest collared ram in 261 last year in sleeping child. That ram, 10 years old, made a major move in November and moved to lower Rock Creek.A young collared ram from the Skalkaho herd was found dead this winter from respitory disease. The GPS tracking of its movements last fall during the rut were unbelievable. I believe it logged over 700 miles, up and down the river bottom. I'm sure he came in contact with someone's 4-H hobby flock of sheep or goats, during this time. Sheep will travel much more, and in places that we ever thought possible. Especially young rams.
I’m a simple person and asked someone who understands sheep one day why we don’t do this. I got a good answer to why. I’m not even gonna attempt to tell you what he told me. With any luck maybe you’ll get a answer from someone on here but it’s just not as simple as let’s move some sheepRelocate them.
Did you shoot the goat?Maybe try getting your facts straight. No question young rams travel, so do old rams. I found the oldest collared ram in 261 last year in sleeping child. That ram, 10 years old, made a major move in November and moved to lower Rock Creek.
Also that wandering ram theory isn't holding much water, the sheep were dying in May, more died in July and August.
This was from last fall between the cattle guards in gird creek...wandering ram or pet goat from a Bitterroot horse ghetto? There was another goat on a horse ghetto right where gird creek leaves the highway.

If you want to skip over all the nerdy stuff in the study, here is the meat and potatoes.Julie Cunningham is working on translocating sheep into all of the available habitat in the Madison range in the next couple years. Potential for up to 1000 bighorns in that range. Talk to her. See what the plan is. Get involved.
