Montana General Season Structure Proposal

From different guys I’ve spoken to in Sonora Mx the deer there will moved by rain, 30-70 miles no problem. Greens up the deer go there, bet eastern Mt would find similar happenings.
I read somewhere there used to be a group of Mule deer that wintered south of Livingston to Big Timber that summered in Yellowstone Park. They took advantage of the wind blown slopes in the winter months. I bet that is a similar distance as many groups along the Rocky Mtn Front or Glacier. Protecting these wintering areas, migration routes, and eliminating obstacles such as low fences should be the FWP number one concern

I fear a lot of us forget to listen to the FWP folks are offering, instead we are focused on making them hear us. If you're open to it, give the social and statistical presentations from yesterday an ear and some thought.
Good point.

What offers are you referring to?

I didn’t notice much in that regard but I was listening with a slightly different perspective. I was listening to see if there’s commonality in areas of concern. If there’s unified consensus then developing a solution is viable possibility. If not, we indeed need to
“make them hear us” first so we can address the issues.

Curious what offers you picked up on?

Similar for elk in the Gila Wilderness in NM where I hunted, but the elk seemed to be missing. The local outfitter told me he couldn't find them either because it had rained in a hunting unit north and the elk had moved there because of the resulting greenup.

I see them offering explanation/justification for the departments action or lack thereof in response to a passionate subset of us that have areas of concern.

I thought the presentation yesterday was really well done. People may not like the answers, but FWP has done a good job throwing the covers back and showing folks what they're doing, why & then giving them the data they use to back it up.

Public comments by four people... Seems lacking though to each your own.

Tomorrow, hopefully a few more to support - share appreciation for the CAC's efforts and a bump for HT citizen season proposal might tinker in their minds. Then again, maybe there's little to no point for public comment - just yammer on a forum.

Thanks to those who commented in support. Unfortunately, work has me in a poor service area without predictable gaps to schedule in time for commenting.

Christ- didn’t realize it happened already.

No worries, just a grumpy post 40 words more than MTMuley.

I'm surprised it wasn't shared in this thread earlier than my 50 minute heads up for registering.

Side note though, if your able to watch, it appeared there were 6-7 others that opted not to make a comment. They went down the list with those asking for anyone to raise the hand (Zoom speak) if they had a comment they wished to share.

Next public comment time is 11:00 am mtn tz.

Montana is years behind WY on migration data too. It wasn't until the first positive CWD test that they started putting more collars on deer. When I talked to the bio he literally said "Almost none of the deer migrated to where we thought they would."
Absolutely, I was swamped with work today. The meeting came up while I was commenting, so I didn't really proof myself. The comment could’ve been much clearer. I stand by the value of research and the necessity for data I previously stated. To be more precise, I believe our primary focus should be on fawn and doe research first, secondly, collaring as many herds as our budget allows. I could live in data filled wildlife reports, making these tough decisions much more clear if we had the data. I do think budget will come into this discussion. The convoluted bio saying budgets never been a issue in 10 years. And then the other speaker saying budget will come into play... so it's the challenge, what one do we think is going to increase the herds first? Collar efforts or fawn? Kind of that push come to shove analysis if they kick back with we can afford 1, what one is more important? I think my response for the first 5 years would be fawns and does.

Will there be another registration period open to allow for public comments today?

I’ve been texting a buddy up in souther Sask, just barely across border. SERM(sask environment resource management) has gone scorched earth on the mule deer across the fence. They killed and estimated 2k mulies. According to my buddy, nothing left along border. Going to affect 670 for years. There’s nothing left on our side either.
This is why regional or even in some cases HDs need to have caps! People aren’t coming to 670 to shoot a whitetail! Spread the dang non res out, force them to other regions to be hunted not just 6 and 7.
