No mule deer in TN lolWhy? Chasing forkies and raghorns no longer pencil?
I am always a bit curious as to why anyone would choose to hunt here vs other western states.

Have some work commitments that made Montana the only viable option for me to do an elk hunt this year. I much much rather hunt other states, but it was really Montana or nothing for me this year and it’s definitely better than nothing.Why? Chasing forkies and raghorns no longer pencil?
I am always a bit curious as to why anyone would choose to hunt here vs other western states.

Well that's far from the truth. Last fall rifle hunting I'd say we spotted an average of 30 mule deer a day. All public land.

The one day that comes to mind was when my buddy shot a 3.5 year old buck. We had about 8 does with 3 bucks at 200 yards. His buck was the biggest of the 3. We worked our way to the top of the finger where the buck was standing to look for the point of impact, and a monster got up (definitely not the buck my buddy shot). It was the biggest mule deer I've ever seen in MT. He jumped up probably 80 yards from us with a dozen or so does and ran them up and over the ridge.
I already filled my buck tag, and my buddy just filled his. It was that bucks lucky day.

There’s still some pockets of deer , sure . But mule deer in Montana are struggling big time this is no secret . Hopefully a string a good winter’s coupled with no more doe harvest on public will help some .

Agreed. Hoping for the best.
The area I was in was one you could shoot a doe in too. Interesting enough anyway!

Hoping for an LE elk tag this year, but I'd be happy with the general... need some good news from MT before NM red waves me for the 11th year in a row!

Totally off subject but I just missed an elk hunter survey call from fwp a few minutes ago . I tried calling it back with no answer . First time I’ve ever been called about elk in all the years I’ve had either an elk A tag or B tag in Montana

I think it’s great . But there should just be mandatory reporting after the season and that would solve the phone tag part of it .
