Man faces charges after mistaking hunting guide for a wolf
Associated Press
LIVINGSTON — A Florida man, who mistook his hunting guide for a wolf, faces criminal charges for blowing a hole in the man's arm with a .300-caliber Magnum rifle.
David Williams, 38, is charged with negligent endangerment. He told investigators he thought the two men on horses approaching him in the dark were wolves.
His guide, J.C. Davis, 25, of Paradise Valley, suffered "extensive damage" to his upper left arm, said Scott Hamilton, the Park County sheriff's detective who investigated the case. Hamilton said Davis had dropped off Williams and a friend to hunt for elk and deer on Tuesday.
"This guy, because they'd been talking about wolves, was scared to death," Hamilton said.
At about dark, Davis rode to pick the men up. He picked up Williams' companion first, and they were walking their horses toward Williams' position after nightfall, Hamilton said.
A little earlier, Williams had seen something run by about 30 yards away. When he heard the horses approaching, he fired three rounds toward the noise with the high-powered rifle. One of the rounds hit Davis in the arm.
"He's been very cooperative and apologetic about what happened," said Hamilton, who found coyote tracks in the area.
