What if I baited it, but then shooed it away and then shot it at 900y?

What is "right/ethical/fair" varies hunter to hunter, state to state, species to species. I have no strong opinion about the "right" answer in this particular case. But I also don't think, "to each their own" at all reflects the current rules/regs of hunting on a wide variety of topics so why would it necessarily be the case in this instance?

Your late to the game, I already found out that they are a sucky hunter so no real need to apply ethics to the question. Lol

I came across a YouTube video in which a 12 year old boy shoots a bull elk at 537 yards. They call it long range hunting. I think it's good for a father to take his sons hunting, but I don't think it's good to teach kids that 500+ yard shots are ethical. Or, that getting within 500 yards of an animal constitutes/defines a hunt. For me, hunting is about close encounters

You can look across a canyon and tell what the wind is doing half way across... Using a higher magnification spotter or scope you can look at mirage or nearby vegetation. The mirage method is good up to about 10 mph but beyond that isn't as useful. However, winds over 10mph tend to be more consistent than winds under 10. Heavier bullets make a difference too. Wind has little affect on my .338 WM as compared to a .243. This makes it possible for wind calls to be less precise. Being newer to long range shooting, I went through learning these things and in all honesty, if you can shoot well, you can learn to shoot long range. It doesn't take a sniper to shoot 1000 yards. Beyond that is more in what sets snipers apart from civilians.

I saw one of the many crappy TV celebs set up for a 600+ shot, then agree with his buddies to walk back to 800+ to make the shot harder - that is d*ck move if you ask me, regardless of your view of long range hunting.

Not my cup of tea, but there are many aspects of hunting that can be enjoyed. Some people are tuned in to ballistics, weapons, shooting, physics, reloading, etc., and I think that’s great. I like being outside, ecology, observing animals, and stalking up close to animals. We shouldn’t be dividing our ranks based on preferences. Hunters are a small group as it is and being outvoted and outmanuvered by other interests all the time.

Agreed, I take issue with anything that promotes unethical behavior.

Long range shooting kinda falls into a grey area for me, often the people you see on TV and in videos shooting long range have the equipment and skill to be extremely effective and therefore ethical, but by glamorizing long range shooting they can be inadvertently promoting or condoning a lot of unethical behavior by folks without the equipment and skills.

I have about 7 years of hunting/shooting experience. I've been witness to ~30 incidents where other people shot or shot at big game animals. I've had two people tell me they practice at the range out to 1000 yards and are very comfortable with their rifle out to 650 yards, I watched one individual empty their gun at an elk at 590 yards and the other miss 3 times at 225. I've never seen someone kill an animal at a range over 250. I've seen 6 different people miss animals at sub 200 yards. Only 1 of the 6 was a new hunter, 1 was a more recent hunter 5-8 years, the rest were life long western hunters and 1 was ex-military. All of these missed shots occurred while shooting prone either on a pack or bi-pod. IMHO that's a lot of crappy shooting for a very small sample size.

These experiences have obviously colored my opinion of what is ethical rifle hunting.

I'm not going to police someone's content but they should think about the ramifications before they post videos.
