Let’s talk about the 243win

IMG_5239.jpeg

My nephew with his first deer. Sane rifle I shot my first deer with, my son shot his first deer with, Ruger M77 mark 2.

If I had to have 1 rifle for anything from bobcats up to just below elk, it would be a 243. I’ve been around a lot of the new calibers. Nothing wrong with them but I’ve seen more deer get away with a 6.5 CM than I ever have with a 243. I wouldn’t be afraid to hunt elk with a 243 with the right range and bullet, but there’s just better options for that need.

I'd give it a good home in my rapidly expanding stable of quarter-bores...
You know, I was thinking it was time for a new rifle to play with. Backed off. It would be splitting hairs to find a new niche gun for big game.
At this stage, the 30.06, .308, .270, and 25.06 check all the boxes.
Old school.

I don't need any of the new cartridges either. mtmuley

I'm going the opposite direction from the long range hunting/shooting.
Need to buckle down to achieve my goal of killing a bull elk, whitetail buck, muledeer buck and antelope buck with both inline and traditional bp.
I have shot about 15 lbs of lead through my muzzleloader since the season ended with the intention of making it my primary hunting rifle this coming season. After thinking on the single shot and big bears I have decided to use an iron sight lever action built in 1922 for early season and switch to the muzzy after I quit seeing bear sign. Either way I am going no scopes 2025 even if I draw a goat tag.

I need to commit. I have a long ways to go. The elk would be the most challenging. The buckhorm sight on my traditional is dead nuts, eye sight not so.

I’m gonna bring the iron sighted .45-70 and .30-30 out next year too. Still don’t have a Hawken, but I want one.

I'm on the same journey. With my in-line all I need is a bull elk (have killed a cow). Just started with my traditional BP and technically have killed a whitetail buck so far, even if I thought it was a doe when I killed it 😅.

Latest 30-06 build that is becoming favorite fast. McGowen 26", 1:9tw, Serengeti bore rider reamer, 0.170 freebore. Eye opening performance for 06. 3100 with 180HH. Just starting additional ladders for other bullet weights. Have rocket .270 as well. The old standard cartridges can shine when their built in governors are removed.

I've killed a moose, muledeer buck with traditional, along with some muledeer does back when it wasn't an issue.
Inline I have killed whitetail bucks and does.

My boys and I have each taken several deer with our .243win.

For me, lighter/reduced recoil loads have been a bit challenging. Good for the kids, tough on me blood trailing. We hunt around some heavy brush so with little or no blood a deer that runs 100y takes a bit to find.

Barnes 80g TTSX have worked well, but still light blood trails. Next season I’m going to try and load up 90g Sierra game changers hoping they expand a bit more aggressively than the TTSX or Accubonds do.

My 11yo’s 1st buck this year, back side of both lungs, ran 120y and tipped over. Found 3 spots of blood and found him grid searching. Hornady reduced recoil 87g SST

I have some 85 and 100 gr Partitions that I want to try on deer this year. The Nosler Balistic tips have been deadly but I prefer an exit .
