The one "camp" pic I never take is the simple borah bivy setup. Spent countless nights in it on bluebird days, and even more in a tipi. Never used a tarp with it but i can see the benefit in weather. Im sure you can more than get by with the bivy and tarp.

Borah bivy is very water resistant but not waterproof. Ive never had it wet out from condensation coming from me inside the bivy. It has wet out from touching the wall condensation of my tipi, which left my sleeping bag just mildly damp on the outside.

After 5+ years of use, it probably wouldnt hurt for me to clean my bivy and apply some fresh DWR. I lay it right on the dirt in an area i "clean" of debris and its held up great.

I swear drift-bustin snowshoe trail is twice as long as hiking boot trail last fall, but the view is worth the excursion exertion.
