LA Authorities Encouraging Nutria Harvest

In Maryland we have hunted the hell out of the nutria. They are not eradicated but enough have been killed you don't hear nearly as much about the issue. I cant say they were all eaten but in this case...I don't care much either.

Anyone got a good recipe for water rat? I'm sure @WildWill could make it palatable with enough time on the smoker.

On the first SE BHA squirrel hunt we had a wild game supper. We had a guy bring nutria. It tastes a lot like rabbit. I'd shoot every one I saw if we had them around here.

Honestly any muskrat recipe would work - yes we ate that too.

My father-in-law grew up in New Orleans and shot the sh!t out of them in the late 50's and 60's. They'd sell them for 50 cents a piece or $5/dozen in low-income neighborhoods. Pretty good coin, considering the cost of 22LR ammo at the time!

I’d like to hunt some nutria around here. Catch is they’re almost all in private land, and good luck getting a land owner to talk to you.

Most of the publicly owned land management seems to hire professional trappers to catch and kill them by the hundreds, so the few wetlands I can publicly access have had their nutria eradicated. It’s a good thing over all, just wish they’d have tried incentivizing hunters first. Could have been a good way to get kids into it, much like the free fishing days.

Believe it or not muskrat is a local dish around these parts. When you start with that nutria can’t be much different.

Myself, I have eaten muskrat. It was slow baked with gravy and very good. I have not experienced nutria.

I've eaten nutria in gumbo. Wasn't bad but you can throw about anything into gumbo and make it taste pretty good. The exception would be coot. Coot gumbo is not good. I don't think anything would make those dang things taste good.

Anyone remember the show Insomniac with Dave Attell? He had an episode some 20 plus years ago where he rode along with a dude hunting Nutria in canals. I wanna say it was in New Orleans.

Literally the first thing I thought of. Is it legal for just anyone to boat around and shoot them at night with a 22? Seems like an easy sell for quite a few folks.
