LA Authorities Encouraging Nutria Harvest

In Maryland we have hunted the hell out of the nutria. They are not eradicated but enough have been killed you don't hear nearly as much about the issue. I cant say they were all eaten but in this case...I don't care much either.

Anyone got a good recipe for water rat? I'm sure @WildWill could make it palatable with enough time on the smoker.

On the first SE BHA squirrel hunt we had a wild game supper. We had a guy bring nutria. It tastes a lot like rabbit. I'd shoot every one I saw if we had them around here.

My Uncle traped and ate thousands of those things!

His name was Uncle Spider :) Everyone needs one of those Uncles

Honestly any muskrat recipe would work - yes we ate that too.

My father-in-law grew up in New Orleans and shot the sh!t out of them in the late 50's and 60's. They'd sell them for 50 cents a piece or $5/dozen in low-income neighborhoods. Pretty good coin, considering the cost of 22LR ammo at the time!

I’d like to hunt some nutria around here. Catch is they’re almost all in private land, and good luck getting a land owner to talk to you.

Most of the publicly owned land management seems to hire professional trappers to catch and kill them by the hundreds, so the few wetlands I can publicly access have had their nutria eradicated. It’s a good thing over all, just wish they’d have tried incentivizing hunters first. Could have been a good way to get kids into it, much like the free fishing days.
