Kansas elk 2023

This fall has been really tough on archery deer and the elk hunters at Ft Riley, with more than 80% of the training area off limits for almost all time their tags have been valid.

This was a cool thread to read. New to the forum. Approaching middle age. Been deer hunting KS in the vicinity of the old Ft. as long as I can remember. I will agree the events of 9/11 lead to the significant change in difficult hunting the Post. So much so, my Dad didn't take us out there to hunt much after that. We stuck to walking the big bluffs and sitting the small spots off the creek on the private land we had access to. As a late teen I swore off firearms and stuck to stirngs, as lofty ideal youth often do. Wrestling was ever more important and rifle season disappeared anyway. I felt at that time carrying a gun instilled too much confidence having not yet taken a successful harvest. I rode the bow grind, still unsuccessfully for the next handful of seasons until taking a shot on a nice 10pt that flexed and managed to guard his pocket nicely with the broad side shoulder blade. In addition to the buck fever and premature stand departure. I lost my expensive broadhead and 4-inches of carbon shaft. With a bloody arrow too short to save. A kicked deer from an 80yd still blood trail. I left the experience deeply frustrated having wished I not taken the shot in the first place.

It is the discipline and experiences that we share with the wild that conserve it. My we all have such discipline as kansasdad.

I apologize for the lofty introduction. I tagged up for the first time this season in what feels like a long time. Figured I would get a read on the room.

Here's to the elk coming back to Kansas!
