Jicarilla and Mescalero Cow Hunts

Who has drawn either of these hunts for cow elk? Do you have a tribal guide you recommend or better yet one you want to avoid? Looking to hopefully draw one of these and put some meat in the freezer this fall. Thanks

hunted cow there 20 yrs ago so maybe this is irrelevant...my young guide hauled ass on icy highways till i put had to on my seat belt...see elk slam on the brakes and holler shoot shoot!! this happened twice, i finally knocked a running one down, got out to recover with him in the lead, she jumped up and he hollered shoot with him in between...i didnt shoot and he says lets go find another one...i said take me back to the lodge and i went home...no questions asked by the tribe...prolly was 1 in a hundred that didnt kill a cow on the jicarrila...it was a donated tag i bought at an rmef banquet so maybe they didnt care

Hot damn that sounds like a ride. I did happen to speak to the biologist today at the Jicarilla and he gave me some good information on the herd and the process. I also spoke to a potential guide and asked about archery hunting for one and he got really excited and said he loves bow hunting but everyone just comes and wants to shoot a cow quick and leave. So that gives me hope.

See if Keith Manwell is still guiding. He worked for the tribal government, monitoring the OG operations, and was driving around every day and knew the whole place really well. He might be late 60s now, though. Pansy family was legendary in the guiding business there.

The cow was $950 plus your tribal guide fee, so $2k. Mule deer the tag is $20k and I think bull elk is $15k

I’ll definitely check into him, I believe the Pansy family is still guiding and has a YouTube channel. I spent the other day drooling over the giant mule deer they have taken.

I stayed a night or two at the casino on the jicarilla. Some of those muleys they have taken off there are huge.

I wouldn’t call it a hunt. We rode in a beat up S10 with a case of coors lite and a bottle of sailor Jerry. I shot one that I watched dust fly off its ribs in the crosshairs and seen it stagger at the shot but it stayed with the group and went over the hill. The “guide” said I think you missed (he didn’t want to pack it out) we then found another group we could get the truck to. The door frame of the s10 makes a great gun rest. I won’t do the cow “hunt” there again, especially with their price increases from a few years ago. Ask the F&G office who their preferred guides are.

Well that was a good ten years ago maybe longer. I don’t get into the casino thing so I didn't go, but the restaraunt and hotel were nice. Restaraunt across the parking lot was decent as well.

Yea I'm not much on that either. Hopefully whoever I choose will be an actual hunter and not a drive around shoot out the window type deal. I did enough of that in my teens hahahaha

Sounds like what I’ve heard. A customer of mine used to do that hunt every year with some friends because he liked seeing his buddies and enjoyed elk meat. He said the price really wasn’t bad for a cow elk and a few days at a lodge but it wasn’t a hunt. He said they definitely just wanted to drive up on something easy to get in the truck.
