For a total muzzy noob living in MT, what would be one or two solid choices for a gun, powder, bullet weight, etc? The plan would be to chase whitetails during the Heritage season and put more meat in the freezer if I still had a tag or two left over from general rifle.
Apologies if the question and answer has been provided earlier in the thread. When it is said that this is a huge rabbit hole, that is no joke...there are a thousand options out there....just looking for some experienced advice from the community.

Traditions shed horn with either a red dot or a globe sight of some sort loaded with a 420 grain no excuse bullet. It’s to late in the year for all that. These guns are more like hunting with archery tackle that rifle they take practice. Also if you do shoot a animal treat it as if you shot it with a arrow

I usually don't do this, but I feel the need to weigh in. I've had and still have both in-line and Lyman rifles.
Maybe I'm lucky (that'll be a first), but I've never had a challenge getting a muzzle loader to shoot well enough to go hunting with. For me, that's whitetail hunting here in Iowa with open sights, .50 caliber lead round ball, 100 grains of black powder OR substitute (blackhorn, Pyrodex, Triple7) and a self imposed range limitation of 100 yards or less.
One of the reasons I've been able to enjoy it is because it is pretty easy from an equipment side and there's limited others in the woods during late muzzleloader season. It's an enjoyable time with fun rifles.

What he said, but in .54 instead of .50. Roundball twist barrel. Buy 2 boxes of .535" balls, enough prelubed 0.015" patches to match, 3 lbs of REAL black powder (Swiss or Goex), and 2 tins of percussion caps.

Just keep in mind if you want to use BH209, you will have to change the breech plug to the proper one.

The diameter of the flash is different from the factory one and one specific for BH209. You will get hang fires from the factory ones.

They may of changed the design but in my accura V2 I had to change it. No issues since.

Totally, it's just unclear if I need it. My reading is that I don't. You only need a different breech plug if you have a 2009 or older.

You may already know this, but that photo is the breech plug from older model CVA's. If you were to buy one at the store today it would be the "QRBP" breech plug and look like this.






Then, the BH 209 breech plug would have a larger flash hole as seen below.

They also list a 1:28 twist version. What are the benefits to going that route?
