Just like most on this page I leave in September for my annual elk hunt. I have been training like crazy and have made real gains. Well that all came crashing down when I strained/pulled or tore my calf muscle at work. I almost tossed my cookies.
For those of you who have had and suffered this injury what is a realistic healing time. I'm 49 and this is my first of this type of injury.
Thanks,
D.

I'd be seeing a specialist ASAP and not be asking medical questions like this on the net when you don't even know what you did. I hope things come along okay and you're able to do your hunt, but September will be here before we know it and IMHO you need to get some prompt medical advice/treatment for a Dr. Good luck!

I did that playing basketball in my forties...took a couple months and I wasn't out of the woods if I did anything to aggravate it.

Def get seen if you haven't. That can turn into compartment syndrome, depending on the severity. That my friend you do not want!

My wife ruptured the Achilles in January, very slow injury to heal. Make sure you get it looked at and possible MRI. That muscle/tendon generates a ton of force and it takes a long time to repair.

Let me tell you about an embarrassing situation that happened to me. I was sparring with my son, who was about 12 and a black belt, and as I transferred my weight back to my back leg I felt and heard a pop. To me it sounded like a gun shot. I immediately fell to the ground, completely unable to put any pressure on it. Called my wife, who had been sitting in the ER with her dad all day long and she told me about the insane wait time. I crawled in to the sofa, had my son bring me ice and anti inflammatory meds and went to bed. I could not put any weight on it for over a week. Got into the doctor finally and they told me I had a torn Monkey Muscle. I thought I had been drinking whn they told me that and then they told me stay off of it for weeks, blah blah blah. I had a job to do and that was not a choice so I used crutches along with ice and nursed it slowly. Mine healed on its own so no surgery.

Compartment syndrome is something nasty. Nashville Predators had their best forward go down with it and was out of the playoffs. Had to do a fasciotomy. If you want to lose your lunch google it. Really don't know for sure what the injury is. Achilles would suck. Muscles are going to suck too, but not as bad as and achilles. Keep us updated.

First off I am not a Doctor but I got to see this play out first hand.

I had an Army friend who was running and heard a pop in his calf. He fell to the ground immediately with pain and there was a noticeable crease formed in the center of his calf. It ended up filling with blood and swelling really bad. He had to have a fasciotomy done, it took a long time before he could run again. Once he thought he was up to par he pushed it too hard and reinjured the same spot again where he earned his second fasciotomy. Come to find out he never let it heal enough and the muscles never came back together like they were supposed to. This ultimately led to his medical retirement.

Jesus! That poor guy. His leg has to be pretty tore up after all that.

OP...any update?

Hard to know how severe it is. Being able to walk normally and packing an elk out are two different things. Do you have friends who could help you pack an animal?

Thanks for the info guys. Well the bean counters at the insurance office said no MRI. But, I have progressed pretty good with some of the therapy stretches and restricted work duties. The Doc says I'm very lucky that it didn't fully rupture the muscle group and I should be good in a couple of weeks to do some legs workouts. Can't wait to be back on the mountain.
