Since I got skunked on AZ tags again, I've decided I can't wait to hunt elk with a bow until the Tag Gods deem it proper, so I've decided to take my new act on the road and I'd like input from you all.

I'm looking at Idaho or Colorado for an OTC tag, this being my first year hunting with a bow. Totally DIY, solo hike in/bivy camp/etc. A work commitment is going to keep me out of any hunt until September 8th or so.

Colorado--(Durango area) pros:
Closer, meaning some chance I'll be able to scout
I think the elk population is much bigger
may have a place to stay a night or 2 in Durango on my way in/out

Idaho (Salmon zone) pros:
have extended family living there, maybe some help not sure how much.
Bull doesn't have to have 4 pts like Colorado (hell, I'd be happy with a spike)

Any input would be appreciated!

I know most would say Colorado, but if for whatever reason you decide Idaho you should try your luck in the controlled draws first.

What's the benefit of the controlled draw? It looks like there are very few permits for archery--only 3 zones (none in the Salmon zone, where my family is), with 105 permits total (10 for non-res) if I'm reading things right.

I'm not doubting your help, just looking for a bit more info...

Ahhh, my bad. I failed to read the "bowhunting" part. With that being the case I couldn't tell you much about the elk archery only controlled hunts. You are right about the 10 non-res permits...kind of. Idaho allows up to ten percent of the tags to go to non-res, but it could be less depending on the order of the draw.

But if you did draw The benefit would likely be you are hunting in an area with more elk than hunters. Hopefully someone else here can help you out more than I can.

I'd hunt where you yourself can scout and not rely on others or you may be disappointed.Co. has alot of elk and if you read maps well and study elk habits you should be able to pick some areas to scout from home. Then get some boots on the ground and find them.If I was in your postion, no doubt, I'd be hunting Colorado.Good luck hunting

CO for sure. Not sure if the Darango are would be my first choice but it would probably as good as ID :)
