I got a good friend that is moving down from Wasilla AK this Oct. Not what he wants to do actually but the Mrs. has had operations on both knees and elbows and the winters are killing her so they have opted to move To better climate. Idaho fits real well with both of them.

They are moving to Idaho falls area and since I didn't get the tag I was hoping for this deer season I thought I would meet him up there and hunt with him. Problem is he doesn't know any areas and neither do I in that area. I have been looking into unit 39 and unit 50 but can anybody give us a starting point to look at around the Idaho Falls area?

Just an idea of the area and or a national forest or mountain to start with would be a great help. Not looking for honey holes or gps coordinates;)

Thanks in advance.

39 is on the west side of the state.

Unit 50 is good for deer. On your way out of IF, be sure to stop at Reed's Dairy Ice cream. Go past Arco, past Moore, turn left on Antelope creek drainage road. You'll find deer. If you hunt late in the season, try the low country. If you hunt early try the higher areas with heavier cover.

I'm with T-bone on 39. Problem is if his knees are as bad as the mrs 39 is a tougher place to hunt.

I would also agree that if your friend is based in Idaho Falls, 39 is a poor choice. Over half the states population lives in the Boise area, unit 39 is next to Boise, why drive across the state to hunt an area that has a lot of hunting pressure?
Unit 69 is a popular area with people in Idaho Falls because it is so close. Units 48, 49 and 50 have higher concentrations of deer than other units in the area but some of the better bucks are going to be in rugged country.

Just about any direction from IF will put you into deer country in an hour or less. YOu could hunt high mtn rugged stuff next to the Wy. border, or hunt the desert if you go the other direction.

One thing about IF, it is still cold, windy and snowy there. And the wind blows. Did I mention it was windy?
