I don't always fish, but when I don't I usually kill something. ;) I wasn't sure where to post this as I normally hang out in the fishing forum and the predator forum doesn't get much traffic. So I guess here will just have to do. Besides it's more about spending time with your kids and a good friend than anything. This morning my youngest daughter wanted to going coyote calling/hunting with me. So we get to the first stand this morning, and I had no sooner finished my first howl. When my daughter suddenly says; "Dad right there is a coyote!" I'm talking this was like 30 seconds into the stand, it was still a little hard to see as it was just right at first shooting light. It took me a minute to find it, but once I did, I still couldn't see it real well due to the poor light and it was standing in some dark brush that really hid it well. I remember thinking, "I sure hope I can see it better through my scope." Thankfully I could and one quick shot later Mr. Wiley Coyote was down. Great way to start the day! I was great to have my daughter along. We made a couple more stands but got blanked and she had to get to work. So I took her home and dropped her off.

My main fishing buddy, outside of my kids, also likes coyote hunting and he and I decided to keep after it. We got stuck once, but due in a large part to him being the size of a bear, he got us pushed out. His nick names, by the way, are either Red Bear or Big Mike, either suits him. Anyway, I wanted him to get a coyote really bad so on the next stand I told him he had first shot, so he better make it count. I ended up calling in a pair, but the smaller one (which was likely a female) held back quite a ways. The big male however came to about 150 yards. I was really glad when Mike's AR-15 barked and the coyote dropped. It's always a great day when both hunter's are successful.

Mike ain't little and neither is this coyote!

As we were walking back out I just couldn't resist taking one more photo as I thought it looked pretty cool. I'm glad I did as it was the last successful stand of the day. We tried a couple more, but the wind had picked up and nothing showed up. We finally got tired of freezing our butts of in the wind and called it a day. A very good day!

So here is my parting shot for this thread.

Funny random thought. I was out looking for lion tracks this morning in an area where I've seen a lot of coyote tracks in the past. Sure enough, I saw where a pair had traveled down the logging road through the heavy timber and you and your coyote calling threads crossed my mind. I think it would be a total ball to spend a week or more in eastern Montana with my kids in the winter calling for coyotes. We have some here in the northwest, but it's pretty difficult to get them to commit in the heavy timber and most of my kills are incidental when I'm hunting other game. Congrats on a great day of calling!

Nice. I thought you might have given up coyotes for fish.

Very nice, not many things more exciting that having a coyote come running in to a call!

What a fun thread and a great way to spend some time passing the winter and having fun with family and fiends. What are you going to do with the hides? They look gorgeous.

It is good to see your out helping me keep a handle on them dogs.
Your daughter is quite the hunting buddy, My Granddaughter has yet to make it out with me this winter'
but she is only 8.
She is more of a summer caller. We have been out a little fishing.
Very nice looking coyotes, we just sold "LAST" years left over for an average $55. ( Sold 9 )
New crop is in the freezer now.

PS; the area sure looks familiar...

huronmtns, no idea what it weighed. Pretty sure bet it's well over 30 lbs.

Gerald Martin, any time I've been lucky enough to hunt eastern Montana for coyotes it's always been good. There are a lot of callable coyotes out there!

JCS, not quite yet. ;)

What Map, one of the hides will go to the fur buyer, the other had rubbed marks and isn't worth the time to process.

Coyotes-R-Us, well it should look a little familiar. Every time you drive east of Great Falls you go right past the place I killed the coyote. It's was less than a quarter mile off the highway. I'm glad it wasn't being video taped as the noise from all the traffic going by would have been a real distraction in regards to the audio. I like hunting places like this though as they are often over looked and driven right past. In talking to the land owner I'm the only one that asked to hunt there this year so far. I love it when I hear something like that!
