I am thinking about getting a replaceable blade knife, how is the Havalon Piranta ?, or what model is best ?
or is another brand better ?

Thanks
Kevin

The Piranta is a really good knife for skinning and caping and things that you don't have to press hard on the blade...the blades are scary sharp, but a little flimsy.

Outdoor Edge makes a new replacable blade knife that I really like a lot. The blade is a lot more stout and holds up to heavier work.

I keep them both in my pack.

I skinned and quartered 3/4 of a bull moose with a Havalon Piranta and two blades last year. I'd say that's a pretty good testament to the knife.

My two thoughts. 1) It is sharper than anything I've used Watch them fingers lol. 2) I really don't like how you change the blades. So I have been eyeballing the outdoor edge version. The havalon blade switch is not as easy as it seems

I still swear by the victorinox parring knives. Cheap, light weight, smallish, very sharp and easy to touch up when needed. I use it for 90% of the work when breaking down and elk and it's still very sharp. Lots of taxi's swear by them as well. Only complaint is you have to come up with a better sheath then supplied.

That's the primary use for my Leatherman anymore, to change the Havalon blades. I'm too paranoid to use my fingers to change those blades in the field.

I couldn't agree more. No sense in taking any chances, especially out in the boonies.

Great, lightweight knife for your pack Kev. I don't carry anything else. If you're like me though, bring a few extra blades to start b/c you'll break them off at an alarming rate, not realizing how much prying you did with a conventional knife.
A couple of years ago, I forgot to put mine back in my pack and all I had was blades. Guess what...yep, I shot an elk that night and had to gut the animal out with just the blade...scary times!

I like my Piranta. Field dress two deer with 2 blades last year. As it was said before the blades are a little flimsy. The only reasn I had to change the blade was because I broke one. They are super sharp. I slipped and stabbed myself in the hand right below the thumb. Got me 3 stiches out of that. I have been looking and considering the Outdoor Edge version also.

Sounds like John is the only one with the Outdoor Edge so far. How is it to change blades on theirs? Better or worse than the Havalon?

Tony Jones gave me one a couple of years ago. Can't imagine heading out without it now. Quartered 3 whitetail w/ 2 blades. The piranta is slicker'n owl snot. I still carry a Gerber gator & gerber bone saw, but they don't get much use anymore.

If the new outdoor edge replaceable blade type is anything near the steel in their swing blade knife you will need a lot of replacement blades. Swing blade knife is too soft to hold an edge but I pack it just to be able to cut the hide as we use the gutless method on most everything. Use the piranta for everything else - only way to go, and it will soon teach you a knife is for cutting - not prying or forcing a blade.

The blade change is a lot easier and safer with the outdoor edge. There's a little button that you push and the blade slides off easily, no tools needed.

On an earlier thread one of the members from Alaska suggested using a nice utility knife that uses regular utility blades. Sees like a great idea and the blades are cheap and probably don't break as easy due to design.

I see that there are a couple of models of the Havalon. 1 uses the #60 blades 2 3/4" long, and the other uses the #22 blades 2 3/8" long.
from the little that I have been able to find on them, the #22 blade appears to be a little more heavy duty ?.
Any thoughts ??

I was reading on the Edge, those blades can be re-sharpened too ?.

Thanks
Kevin
