GUNWERKS

Well, that kind of depends on your idea of "worth" doesn't it? I build rifles for my customers that I would put up there with the best of them, but I could not justify charging a customer $13k for a bolt rifle for hunting and still sleep at night (unless it had a museum quality hand made walnut stock and bluing job)...I know what the material costs are.
No doubt. If you are using the finest techniques for machining and bedding and high quality components a very high performing custom can be built for about $6,000. That's a quality action, stock, bottom metal, trigger, and any barrel under the sun. I've got some of these and like them very much, but Gunwerks is an innovator. The R&D cost comes from somewhere and folks who dispose of capital don't seem to mind too much. I've always snickered a little in sheep camps or the like when a guy uncases one and quietly hoped he didn't know how to use it. He always did.

The $13k comes with a $4000 scope, $1200 data package, probably a titanium action, pic rail, high end scope rings, etc. and ammo you can buy that will shoot good out of it without hand loading and load dev.

So, comparing a $6000 custom bare rifle really needs to be compared to a $7000 gunwerks bare rifle.

The $13k is a little misleading.

It’s chronographing, setting up ballistics for your elevation, temp, and probably truing either velocity or BC and validating it out to 1000 yards.

Stuff you can do yourself for sure.

Are they are shooting each given rifle and trueing BC of known bullets? I would be very surprised if so. Rangefinder will spit out a solution for the real time density altitude, why would you need gunwerks to provide one for guessed atmospherics?

Are they really shooting 100+ rounds through their barrels until velocity is stabilized?

I don’t know.. there’s probably some value if they actually validate all the components work properly. They usually do with quality stuff regardless but I could see some bugs worked out if they actually shoot ‘em enough at distance before sending them out.

What Cartridge?

I have a buddy who had a close friend there and thought he could get me a deal on one. I wanted a 7 SAUM clymer, deal wasn't much of a deal or I likely would have one. I built one on a tikka instead and the gunsmith/options chosen were a mistake. Woulda been more happy with the clymer i'm sure.

7 SAUM.

It’s been a great rifle. Easy to load for and gets the job done.

From my understanding, they validate every rifle with their ammo requiring each one to print back to back 7 shot groups meeting 0.75 MOA. Most companies call it a half MOA or MOA rifle if they can get one group with any ammo out of a number of tries.

With the data package they then break in the rifle, validate at distance, provide a data package that you scan with a QR code and upload the data profile into their app. Evidently you sight in the rifle because everyone shoots a bit differently and then can dial out with the data given using their app and shoot to distance.

You’re paying for people to do some work for you for sure.

You can buy good rifles elsewhere, you can work up loads for your good rifles, but their biggest value is probably being able to buy “off the shelf” ammo that is guaranteed to shoot great out of your GW rifle.

Everything about their model is unnecessary including the accuracy and quality of their rifle. Especially for 99% of hunters like myself who have no business shooting game past 400 yards.
