With the way things go today the store owner will probably be charged with assault with deadly weapon and dude is probably already out on bail and robbing another store.

I watched but didn't listen.
My wife has always said, in regards to our kids, "Begin in the way you intend to go." Or, don't let the kids get away with stuff today that you won't allow when they're older. Back talking (or narcissistic behavior, or violence, or lying, or ...) isn't cute at 13 so it shouldn't be cute at 2.
In the coming years our country will need to correct actions which today are waved away as inconsequential. But trying to put those character traits back in the box they should never have been allowed out of is a daunting task. I don't know how it's done. It's like letting a kid get away with whatever they want until they turn 13 and then trying to bring correction. It's going to be messy, if not impossible. But to avoid it is the downfall of a civilized society.

Perhaps we need an “almost lethal” injection. Thieves probably shouldn’t die for a few hundred dollars worth of cigs, and putting folks in prison where they are fed and sheltered seems too nice, but perhaps something that makes thieves wish they were dead for a few days while they contemplate their life choices? Maybe that machine from “Princess Bride”? Then again, maybe folks should just be allowed to protect their property with lethal force?
